The regions have different numbers of teams (39 in the Central, 22 in the South Central). They apparently think that having different-sized brackets balances things in some way.

You might remember several years ago when it was determined that the regions should be the same for all sports, except football (fewer regions). When that happened it created a disproportion in the number of baseball teams in the regions. Before that they would move conferences to different regions for different sports to try to even up the regions. One of the early years of the new format baseball had 48 teams, 6 from each region. CentralMO missed the tournament for the first time in 20 years with a better record than half of the teams in the West region and the Central region had many more teams than the West. I'm sure there were others in the same boat and the result was different number of teams based on participating schools in the region.

A few more details on 2014. The Mules won the MIAA by 6 games with a 32-8 record. There were so many teams due to expansion that there was not a full round robin schedule. The Mules didn't play MIAA games with Emporia and lost both mid-week non cons to the Hornets (the only MIAA team to make the field). They also were swept out of the MIAA tournament in the 1st round by Northeastern finishing with a 35-16 record, 19 games above .500. The 6 teams that made the Central region field were 32, 26, 23, 22, 21 & 21 games above .500.

16 of the other 42 schools to make the tournament had worse records than the Mules including 4 from South Central (the region the MIAA was moved out of). I'm guessing something similar happened to others in 2013 (the first year of the region change) but the Mules made the field so it wasn't an issue to Mule fans.

            Thanks for the explanation.

The NCAA can be so frustrating.

Both games had the home team's rally in the 9th inning come up a run short and both home teams hit a 3-run homer in the 9th. With Augi up 10-6, Mankato's Adam Schneider hit the home run to make the score 10-9. Augi brought Caleb Saari into the game to get the final 2 outs for his first save of the season. Caleb Kranz (3-0) got the win in relief for Augi.

In game 2 it was looking as if the Mules would be shutout for the first time since they were eliminated by Colorado Mesa 1-0 in the 2019 national semi-final as they trailed 5-0 in the bottom of the 9th. The first 2 batters reached and Harrison Schnurbusch hit the homer for the Mules. The Mules scored another run before Ouachita got the final out in the 5-4 win. Ouachita's starter, Cooper Timmons (9-3), tossed 6 shutout innings for the win.

The ace's for both losers, Mankato's Nick Altermatt (10-1) & CentralMO's Colin Jones (9-1) both suffered their first loss of the season.

In the other sub regional, Henderson broke a 5-5 tie with 6 runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th and held on to win 11-6 over Northeastern.

Trailing 10-5, SoArk scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 8th and held on to beat 12-11 over Washburn.

The region had 1 matchup of NSIC teams and 3 matchups with an MIAA team playing a GAC team. The GAC was 3-0 in those games.

An MIAA team finally wins a game as CentralMO wins the elimination game against Mankato 9-6. Mankato scored 4 runs (3 in the 3rd & 1 in the 7th) without a hit. In the 3rd a walk, error, hit batter and another walk were followed by 2 rbi ground outs. In the 7th a walk, error, sac bunt followed by a sac fly. The Mules out hit the Mavs 14-7 with 6 different Mules getting 2 hits.

As frequently happens, the Mule starter did not pitch 5 innings so the official score got to choose the winning pitcher. Josh Bortka (4-0) was awarded the win. After a rough first inning of relief, he retired the last 6 batters he faced. Brady Gavin got the final 6 outs for his 7th save.

An MIAA team had to win game 3 in Magnolia as Washburn & Northeastern were both playing for their first NCAA tournament win. The Bods led 13-7 going into the bottom of the 7th but the River Hawks answered with 3 in the 7th, 2 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to walk it off and eliminate Washburn 14-13.

A GAC team finally lost in game 4 in Warrensburg. Trailing 4-3 after 3, Augi scored 9 straight runs and held on to beat Ouachita 12-7.

SoArk wins the final Central regional game of the day as Henderson's 9th inning comeback comes up a little short, about 23 runs short. The final was 28-5.

Just watch the Mules hammer QBU. Beating UCM will be a tall task for my Augustana Vikings.

Game 5 was the first "blow out" to this regional. The Mules scored 10 runs in the 2nd inning and Ouachita never got closer than 8 runs the rest of the way as the Mules won 19-5. The 10 run 2nd included 2 players who drove in 4 runs apiece as Isaiah Pani drove in the 1st run of the inning with a single and the 7th, 8th & 9th runs with a double. Donovan Ditto, who had hit a 3-run homer earlier in the inning, followed with an rbi double for the 10th run of the inning.

In all the Mules had 24 hits led by Pani with 4. With subs, the Mules sent 12 different batters to the plate and 9 of those, including both of the 3rd basemen batting in the 9th spot, had at least 2 hits.

Max Abramovich (1-1) went 5-1/3 for the win and Hunter Little tossed the final 3-2/3 shutout innings for his 1st save.

Game 6 had some back and forth to it as Augie scored 2 in the top of the 1st, CentralMO scored 3 in the bottom of the 2nd and Augie answered with 1 in both the 3rd & 4th. The lead changed for good on the first 5 pitches in the bottom of the 6th. On the first pitch the batter hit a grounder to the hole between short & 3rd but the Augie SS was positioned perfectly, 1 out. The next pitch was grounded up the middle that was fielded on the 3rd base side of second by the 2B (also positioned perfectly), 2 outs. The 3rd pitch hit the batter. Pitch 4 was a ball and pitch 5 was hit off the "Championship" sign in right field by Michael Chrisman and Mules never trailed again.

The Mules added 2 more in the 7th when, who else, Isaiah Pani doubled in a run, moved to 3rd on a sacrifice and scored on a sac fly. The sac fly was actually a short liner to the CF. The throw took the catcher into foul territory on the 3rd base side and Pani dove to the 1st base side of home plate to score the final run in the 7-4 win. We thought the call was right, I'm sure the Augie folks thought it was wrong, but it was a beautiful dive regardless.

Conner Wolf (5-1) tossed 4-1/3 innings of 1-hit scoreless relief for the win and Brady Gavin got the last 3 outs for his 8th save.

                              Game 7 is today @ 1pm.

In the other Central sub regional, Northeastern scored the final 8 runs (including 5 in the bottom of the 9th) but fell a run short (11-10) against Henderson and was eliminated.

Henderson was eliminated in the next game when SoArk scored a run in the bottom of the 8th and Tucker Burton walked it off with a solo shot in the 9th for a 12-11 win.

SoArk will either host Augie or travel to Warrensburg next weekend.
