IUP has another big one tomorrow at Seton Hill. This would be the game I would have picked for IUP's first loss, not Clarion.
I mean IUP took Cal UP to the woodshed the other night just like so many other teams this year. You think they are ready for another big matchup, but who knows!

The Clarion loss is what it is. That type of 'WTF' performance happens to just about every team in every basketball season. We sure don't see many undefeated teams in the history of college basketball.
Make no mistake, it could have massive ramifications when it comes to determining which team hosts the Regional, etc.
But, I honestly believe the 'coach speak' that teams don't get better until they lose one. They start thinking they are too special when they get to 16-0 or whatever. Getting knocked down often refocuses them. Their bounce back game was impressive. Cal had zero chance.
I fully agree tomorrow will be a tough one. Seton Hill is really good in their building. But, I like IUP's chances.
One odd item that gets overlooked when you play in Greensburg is the women's game is the main event on that campus. It's the only venue in the league that gets a huge women's crowd -- which then leaves before the men's game starts. I've seen it happen there probably 9 of the past 10 years IUP has visited.

I have seen the same thing happen at Ashland. Once the women are done, about 75% of the crowd leaves.
I will definitely be following the IUP game tomorrow. As far as regional ramifications, as long as IUP beats Gannon a second time, they are going to be in good position. But in terms of RPI today, Gannon is number one in the region this week for the 1st time, despite the head to head.

IUP now owns road wins over the top three teams in the West that aren’t IUP. They are in the driver’s seat, even with the inexplicable loss to Clarion. Realistically, it’s a two horse race now between IUP and Gannon with Gannon needing a win at IUP on February 28 to have any chance at hosting the regional. No disrespect to the others and both IUP and Gannon have had some close calls, but assuming both hold serve I believe IUP only has to beat Gannon on the 28th or in the conference tournament to earn the top seed in the region.
As for today’s game, Seton Hill hung in there for a lot of it but IUP’s depth and athleticism eventually wore the Griffins down. It’s hard to play 7 against 10. Seton Hill’s starting five is pretty good, but their lack of depth is what has them on a tier below IUP, Gannon, and maybe even Edinboro.

Not to mention SH is really good in that building.
I thought the Griffins' press caused them more harm than good. Tired them out.

The problem for SH was IUP can run too, including their bigs. That up and down game works well against a lot of opponents, but it’s not a good strategy for beating IUP.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View Post

I was mistaken in my original post. IUP still plays at Edinboro and that’s on Saturday. They’ll have to get through that one and Cal on the road as potential hiccup games. The rest of the tough games will be at home.

IUP should've been #1 already with the head to head over Gannon already but yes, number crunching they weren't for some reason. A lot of basketball left.Originally posted by Bballfan View Post

Yes. They should have. Gannon even was at 2 losses. RPI isn't the definitive qualifier, so I think IUP would have still been ahead.
Now it could get interesting if they split in the regular season. In that case, it could come down to who wins the PSAC. But in general, conference championships have little impact on the rankings other than allowing a team to "play in" to the tournament if they were otherwise not in the top 8 (it does happen from time to time).

The CIAA is pretty infamous for having a team come out of nowhere to win the conference tournament on the men's side. It is one highly unpredictable league.
