Well I doubt he is going for free unless he has other schollies, etc. But did I read his quote correctly? Will he have his masters degree done in the spring?

I don't think that is correct. I think it's basically like this year didn't happen for anybody as far as eligibility goes. For Example, Kallman played 4 years at Northern and has now entered the transfer portal.
