Winona "lived" in the portal the last couple of years because their core was pulled a part by D1s taking their guys as part of this new phenomenon of NIL.

So I wanted to see if it were true or if it was more dramatization. Seems that’s not the case so perhaps it’s another reason?
The only one I can think of last year was Conor Dillon who was an absolute star at Winona, transferred to his hometown Bradley, and saw very little action. He was a fifth year grad student who I think had a COVID year to spend. He gave Winona four years so you can’t complain about that. We will see how Haertle is received. I expect he will be used more than sparingly as I don’t rate the Summit on balance as that much above the better NSIC teams.

Jack Janicki from WBL is playing at Wisconsin.

Derrick Dissete (spelling?). Former Minot High School player and former ND Mr. basketball, I believe. He has some athleticism, but didn’t get much playing time at NDSU.

              • There are a number of reasons that players get overlooked on the recruiting trail. These include level of competition, quality of teammates, grades, location, size, skill set. Some of those reasons can correct themselves with D2 college success to where they become coveted in the transfer portal, while others do not.

For example, had Bergstraser not left for Denver, I don't know if Carson Johnson would have ever received Division I interest, largely due to his size. If the Leaf-era Warriors had the transfer portal, I don't know if John Smith would have received offers good enough to leave Winona because Division I schools rarely build around 6-foot-8 centers. On the other hand, I think guys like Jonte Flowers and Cody Schilling almost certainly would have received tempting offers. Their limited recruiting interest out of high school had nothing to do with their size or skills, I'm sure.

Each kid has to make a decision in his or her own best interest. It's easy to sit on a couch and say "that's a Division I player" or "that kid is better off in Division II". I think even coaches get stuck saying that sometimes. I remember one regional kid in particular, whose offers were SMSU, SCSU and a tiny Division I program out east. I remember thinking it was a mistake for him to go Division I because he would probably just sit on the end of the bench for his whole career. He went to the Division I program, and ended up as one of the best players in program history. I believe he's still playing pro ball in Europe after nearly a decade.

I hate the “he’s a D1 player” statement. There’s been all kinds of D1 players (mostly mid major type players) that played D2 basketball in the NSIC in the past. Many different reasons for it, and in most cases probably the best decision was to play D2. The only thing that’s really changed for many players in the transfer portal era is the NIL money available today. There will be plenty guys that will get a little bit of NIL money at a mid major D1 schools and likely regret the decision to leave a good D2 situation. It will be interesting to see if some D2 schools are able to find some reasonable NIL money for players. I’m sure a few schools will be able to do so (I believe some already do, on a small scale).
