  • D1 Versus D2 Exhibition - List Competitive Scores here

Many D1 fans are not aware that many upper level D2 teams with good coaching and high basketball iq players can be quite competitive with D1 schools on a given night.
I invite folks to post the scores of competitive D1 versus D2 so that we can raise awareness of the quality of D2 basketball.

It has also been my experience that D1 teams DO NOT want to lose to D2 teams in exhibition and will play their top players as needed to secure a win, as evidenced by the minutes played in the box score (D1 fans often unknowingly assume that the D1 team emptied the bench and did not care). Also, typically they are always played on D1 home court (findlay versus toledo was a notable exception).

Sometimes, D2 plays D1 tough for a half but eventually gets worn down by the depth. But that does not tarnish the high level of basketball play.

Here are a few games, as a starting point.

    Year - Game - Score - Notes
2017 Win - Barry defeated Auburn 100-95 despite committing 8 more turnovers and shooting 20 less free throws
    2017 Win - Findlay beats Toledo 89-86
2017 Loss - Ferris State plays Michigan State tough down to the last few minutes before falling 80-72 with MSU not pulling away until 6 minutes left (MSU was behind at the half).
    2015 Win - Augustana beats Iowa 76-74
2015 Win - St. Thomas Aquinas beats St. Johns University 90-58
2007 Win - Findlay beats Ohio State 70-68, which was the season BEFORE Findlay won the National Championship.

2009 Win--Lemoyne beats Syracuse 82-79 in a year the ORANGE were 30-5 and lost to BUTLER in the regional final. These two teams still play most years.

2007, GVSU beat #8 Michigan State 85-82 in double OT. MSU went on to the sweet 16, and GVSU went undefeated that season up until the Elite Eight.

I didn't watch this game live, but I get the sense that Iowa did not want to lose this game. Augustana went toe-to-toe with a team that at one point in the season would be ranked #1 in the country.

                  I'll share this one too:

                  2014:#21 Nebraska 83, SMSU 61

                  https://smsumustangs.com/boxscore.as...72&path=mbball

The game finished as a blowout, however SMSU never trailed in the first half, at one point leading by as many as 13 points. The Huskers outpaced them in the second half. It was a fun game to listen too.

In 2006 Winona State had three exhibitions against D1's. Results as follows:

                      10/31/06: WSU 88 - Drake 86
                      11/01/05: Bradley 90 - WSU 77
                      11/08/06: WSU 69 - University of Minnesota 64

Bradley was a Sweet 16 the prior year.

Last season (2017), Southern Indiana men's team beat Eastern Illinois 85-82. More impressively, In 1990, they beat Wisconsin 78-66. Interestingly, neither of those teams was our 1995 championship team or 1994 runner-up. In fact, we didn't even make the NCAA tournament last season despite winning the exhibition.

In 2016, Southern Indiana women beat Butler 61-56, and in 2014 they beat Evansville 76-72.
