Other than Bellarmine, none of the GLVC teams put fear into teams around the country like KWC and USI did before.
GLVC has never been a football conference and doesn't claim to be. What it claims to be is the best D2 basketball conference in the country - which it has been and still is.

How many titles did SIUE and IPFW win?

The idea that Truman State is not a valuable member of any D2 conference is irrational. It is a high quality academic institution with competitive sports teams. Truman State is by far the highest quality addition to the GLVC since Drury was added.

I can't imagine a scrub from Owensboro ever hooking up with a high class gentleman such as yourself...(end sarcasm font)

We were talking about them running from the MIAA because they could not compete in football. They were also getting their brains beat in in basketball half the time, their president even said they were leaving the MIAA for the GLVC to be competitive.

If you are my buddy Jim, I'm getting me one of those plaid coats to wear for the KWC games.

Now that would be interesting, since, I, um, don't work for Truman.

I was having issues with a mobile response and decided that I didn't want to re-type my responses to the posts I was responding to. I reached out to those individuals via PM so we could have an actual, non-hijacked, discussion.

This is a long and rambling post, but I'm just collecting thoughts on the claim that Truman was supposedly an addition to a weak GLVC.

At the time of Truman would have been having the conversations to join the GLVC (2012-13 season, joined in 2013-14 season), the GLVC was arguably the strongest league in the nation in terms of the top half of the league in men's basketball, which is the heart of the GLVC (not football). It was the year that Drury won the national championship. At one point, 4 GLVC teams were ranked in the top 10 alone - not including Drury.

In that particular season, the GLVC had 7 teams that I would consider powerhouses - it was a bloodbath of a season. Drury 31-4, BU 24-8, USI 23-8, KWC 20-8, UIndy 20-9, UWP 20-9, Lewis 19-9. Notice that 6 of these seven teams were in the EAST division, while Drury was able to cruise through the weaker WEST division, which gave them the strong upper hand in hosting the regional. I'd say that any of those teams could have been national champs that year if they had the luxury of home court advantage for regionals.

That season was also NKU's first season in D1, which meant that McKendree was brought in to fill the void. McKendree was coming off of a string of good seasons in the NAIA, but never quite found their stride in NCAAII after transitioning, going 7-21 their first season. It didn't help them that they were in the East (power) division of the conference, and at the time, scheduling was set up so you play your division twice and then only half of the other division once.

And therein lies the rub - the imbalance of the East and West divisions coupled with the silly scheduling was probably attractive to a weaker MAIA team who wanted to join in the GLVC West division. Truman's last season in the MIAA was 10-17, but then they jumped out to a 20-7 record their first year in the GLVC. They didn't have much competition in the West - Drury was running the show and UMSL was average, but other than that, it was wide open for Truman's taking. So I can see where somebody may say that they could be more competitive, because they had the expectation of getting the weaker half of the league to play.

The kicker to this is that the first season that Truman joined, the GLVC switched over to the "Pod" scheduling structure which made it a little more difficult for the West teams - play 3 opponents in your pod twice and everybody else in the league once. USI/BU/Indy still got grouped together, and Truman dodged a bullet by not getting paired with Drury (who probably had the easiest pod of all with S&T, WJ, and Rockhurst). In their run thru the east division teams, Truman got the benefit of hosting USI and BU, and stunned both teams with the upset.

Since that season, Truman has improved each year and is now part of our discussion of who can win the west. This year it looks to be a three-way race with Drury, Quincy, and Truman.
