  • Re: New bellarmine thread

I agree with Billy Reed's sentiments. I am a long time reader of the CJ and it saddens me to see the trashy thing its become. They fill up pages with articles from Cincy, Indy, Evansville, Lexington newspapers (cheaper than paying their own staff). The sports section is filled with articles about high school juniors who commit to play football at U of L and then change their mind 1 year later (who cares!?) and high school juniors that are going to play basketball at UK for one year (maybe if they don't get arrested first). I can't wait for another article on an assistant football coach at one of those two schools who is gonna get a new contract for 800K then will likely be gone in a year or two.

The C-J's coverage stinks and gets worse and worse. Seems, at best, we'll get an occasional, token "human interest" type of article like this:

Kind of funny that as soon as we start ragging on the CJ, they have a good article.

This whole Bellarmine coverage thing has been percolating a few days. Been meaning to post about it, but been really tied up with work and fam stuff.

Someone recently contacted the C-J about their cr_ppy BU coverage and received the email pasted below, which is floating around on social media (even Scotty shared it).

We have scaled back significantly on our Bellarmine coverage. Based on our online analytics, we had very few people following our Bellarmine coverage the way we had traditionally done it, which included stories previewing games and game recaps. Because of that, we now only do occasional Bellarmine stories, though they are typically of a higher quality. We just have to pick our spots better as we make sure we're putting our resources in the places with the highest return.

Amen! Very well said, and I could not agree more.

Being back in L'ville is nice in that I can more easily attend Bellarmine games, but this city really is a horrid sports market in general. Most of the time it seems that all the populace cares about are the bloody "Cats" and "Cards." Ugh.

Maryville has a good record but their schedule has been pretty weak. Their biggest wins are @Rockhurst, a 5-8 Cameron team on a neutral site, and Cedarville @home. They lost to WJ and Central Missouri. In fact they have only played 3 D2 schools with winning records, losing to 2 of them. They may win the Central Division but that is more due to the weakness of that division than to how good Maryville is.
Great effort by Bellarmine in the second half. They really got after it on defense. I will say that the refs helped them by refusing to call a foul on Bellarmine - including a couple of blatant rebounding fouls late in the game. 3 team fouls for the entire game and 0 in the first half in a game that physical? Sorry, but that's a joke. It's absolutely impossible for a college team to play an entire half without committing 1 team foul. Knights Hall is the new Sportscenter in terms of the home team getting a good whistle. There's zero possibility that the refs Drury has in the O' on a consistent basis would let us play defense on the perimeter like BU did against Maryville in the second half of that game. Gotta give Scotty credit, though - the guy has absolutely no conscience when it comes to working the refs. He has zero team fouls in the first half and he's working the refs over like they just stole his car.

I'll also say this - Maryville has some talent. And anyone who thinks that William Jewell's record is solely the product of an easy schedule should watch the BU/Maryville game on archive on the GLVC Sports Network and then realize that Jewell beat Maryville by 21. They're not deep, but their first 5 is athletic and they can play.

The officiating was certainly hands off. It might have been the fewesr fouls called I've ever seen. It made for a fun game. BU did a nice job of adapting to the refereeing.. A lot of Maryville fouls were end of the game intentional fouls.

Maryville started fouling with a little less than two minutes left if I remember correctly. They had four fouls at that point. They ended up with 11 fouls in the second half I believe which means 7 of their 15 fouls for the game were intentional at the end of the game. There was a decent amount of contact during the game with amazingly few fouls called. I would agree with the comment that Maryville has some talent this year and will be a tough opponent for all of the GLVC teams.

Went back and checked the play by play with the box score. You were very close to right. Maryville committed 8 fouls after the 1:45 mark in the second half, meaning they only had three fouls before they began to intentionally foul. Referees simply were not calling many fouls. It may have been the best referreed game I've seen in a while from a spectator perspective. The funny thing was that Bellarmine only had one foul called against them in the first half and that was a lousy call against Corbett on what was a clean block.

Really tough game for BU on Saturday. WJ did play last night, but it was in Kansas City. Knights were getting on a bus this morning and driving to Kansas City, maybe 10 or 11 hour drive? Although BU surprised me when they beat Barry on the road under similar circumstances.

BTW USI may have it even tougher on Saturday, having to play at Drury and Drury did not even play last night. Evansville to Springfield, however, is not as long a trip as Louisville to KC.

Bellarmine left immediately after the game last night and arrived this morning in KC

                      • The GLVC has adopted a new Point Rating System, voted on by conference HCs, that will be used to determine the eight programs on each side that will advance to the GLVC Basketball Championship Tournaments. The point system will provide a team more points for a win against top competition, and will also distribute points for losses against stronger competition. The eight teams with the highest ratings at the end of the regular season will qualify for the conference tourney, regardless of standing in the three five-team divisions (no automatic bids will be granted to division winners).

Now I don't want to be technical on you but BU did have one foul called on them in the first half. I'm not saying they didn't foul anybody but the refs were pretty consistent both ways. Maryville only had 5 fouls called on them in the first half and as has been pointed out only 3 in the second half before they started to foul intentionally. It was a good game from a spectator standpoint. Moved right along. There was a lot of contact going on inside but the refs chose to let them play. Better than calling 40 fouls and shooting free throws all night

The team left after the game and spent the night in St Louis, practiced there and drove to KC yesterday afternoon.
