  • Re: New bellarmine thread

I thought Lewis played well. the Zone defense was extremely effective. I don't understand why they went out of it late in the first half. They were playing the zone loose around the free throw line. We did throw the ball in there, but then were ineffective passing it from that position. Seems to me that both Weyer and Eberhard were passing up makeable shots if they would have just turned and shot the ball. You make a couple of those and the zone gets tighter and creates more open 3 chances. Bellarmine did not play poorly, I give Lewis a lot of credit.

Weyer's play of late is worrisome. Right now CC is playing the best at that position.

Lewis seemed to know that if that pass to the middle of the zone was received and Eberhard or Weyer turn and face the basket they always are looking to pass and not shoot. Seems to me an unmolested jump shot just inside the free throw line is a pretty good one to take.

I agree it seems like sometimes we are unselfish to a fault. For us to win this Weyer and Cook have to contribute offensively both look very hesitan, afraid to make a mistake.

          • As I said earlier in the season when the question was posed: Bellarmine is the team that poses the biggest threat to Bellarmine.

We came into the Parkside game overconfident and it showed in the effort displayed the first 30 minutes on the defensive end of the floor. They played virtually no defense until the last 10 minutes. Very little patience on offense. Look at the assist total (10) and turnovers (17), many of which were unforced, trying to force the ball or go one-on-one. Everyone expected Parkside to play zone - they didn't, and it didn't make any difference. Parkside defended Bellarmine better than anyone this year - because we didn't have good spacing or rotate the ball.

All this against a team they handled easily in KH. The worst team in the conference. Bellarmine embarrassed themselves with their play and with the the technicals. This team is only as good as their defense. You can't let a team shoot 58%. Second straight game we allowed a team to shoot better than 50%.

It is hard to sweep the Lewis/Parkside road trip. The worst thing for a USI fan happened today and that was this loss to Parkside. Most teams at all levels of college basketball have at least one really bad loss. Nothing more and nothing less.

Yes it is hard to sweep those two teams most years, but there was really no excuse for this loss except to look at Bellarmine. While I misspoke earlier - Maryville hit over 50%, Lewis was at 47% - still, the season defensive FG% is 42%. Since the break, the trend is weaker defense against weaker teams. This loss will hurt more in the region because of who we lost to. As Doug Ormay said during the radio broadcast; "Who were those imposters wearing Bellarmine uniforms?"

We really can't blame the officiating, or the travel schedule, or the fact that Parkside was rested. With superior talent, we just didn't play well in any aspect of the game.

By the way, #1 Queens lost 73-72 to LMU.

ugly game. The first technical came at precisely the wrong time. I can't figure out what happened there. Ebby and Bach shoot combined 61% the rest of the team shot combined 36%. Ebby and Bach had 6 of the teams 8 steals. They were also the two leading rebounders. We were due one really lousy game, but with as bad as UWP has been this year we should have been able to take this one. NO offense threat from anyone other than the two mentioned players. Ramser had 18 minutes on the court but if you look at his stats it looks as if he didn't get off the bus. (All right I know that's not fair since he's the kind of guy who does good things that don't show up on the stat sheet.) We'll need a much better effort Monday.

This is a critical time for this team, I hope they respond well.

No matter how good things may be going in a given season, Bellarmine never seems to play too well at UWP.

My hunch is that the Knights will be ready come Monday, and I would not want to be USI. Of course, my opinion and $1.50 will get you a cup of coffee.

Bellarmine stunk up the joint. Biggest surprise was we went ahead and couldn't maintain the momentum.
Does anyone have an explanation for CC's T? It was certainly an unusual circumstance for a T, and on a guy who I thought was one of the most mature guys on the team.

It looked like he was mouthing at the other player, Ref was right there.

I agree with everything you said, Scotty is a great coach, but it seems like the players have such a short leach they are not playing loose, they get pulled after every mistake. I would think the rotation will get smaller as the seasons goes along.
