  • Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

Not that this matters, but....I made every attempt to get to Rex Pyles last night. I left work at 3:30. Upon arriving in Cumberland, the snow was coming down hard. I continued. Going up I-68 to Frostburg, there were 4 salt trucks taking up all 3 lanes and the shoulder. They were all in a row. They were going 25 mph. There was a winter storm warning but I tried. I got to Finzel and it was awful. The next 60 miles would have been treacherous. I turned around at that exit and went home and watched the game. I should have known better.

I thought we played well first half. Two turning points:

*their big white guy hitting two consecutive 3's and another outside jumper. We had the momentum but that was a mismatch, although I thought Mitchell played as good as he could there. Give credit to that guy for nailing those shots. That turned the first half. It was 13-6 us and went to 14-13 them.
*It is ridiculous that we keep starting the 2nd half like we do. The first five minutes of the second half was the ball game. The first 3 they made was bad break. Haywood dove for a loose ball and threw it back in. Their guy got it, reversed the ball and hit an open 3. It is 39-34 at that point. Nothing you can do there. But then Haywood comes down and does some awful move and throws a laser behind him to nobody but one of their players who goes down and gets a layup. We are now down 7. Cooper (who really played well) missed a jumper....they go down hit a 3 and it really unraveled. I give credit that we didn't tank. But this scenario is playing out too often after halftime. We really have to run some plays to get the ball in Bocook's hands on the move. Run him off a double-screen and get him the ball. He is such a great passer that he doesn't have to score. He made a beautiful pass to Cooper in the first half last night. But you have to have your best basketball player getting the ball to start the second half. This poor start to second halfs happened at Cedarville, Ohio Valley was a complete cluster after halftime, Davis & Elkins used a 11-0 run to start the second half on us, Glenville at home, etc, etc. Something isn't translating coming out of the locker room.

I think AB fans should be hopeful after watching Cooper and Bocook play last night. They did well. We need to get some more players around them. I thought Mitchell and Manny got after it hard. Sanders does some good things with the ball. He also made some good fouls that would have been breakaways on transition. I thought he got a little carried away with his emotions near the end of the game. The refs should have called a jump ball much sooner while bodies were scrambling. That would have never have escalated had they called that sooner. Bocook didn't have his best game but they overplayed him a lot. He did do a lot of good things. I like that we ran some nice backdoors early.

The picture on the video looks good. However, I think the school is having some real issues with internet service up there. I don't know if that is a provider issue or what. I had to keep clicking back on the video link last night. That has happened a few times this season. I think the SID does a good job getting the video back up quick.

I plan on being at alumni weekend in two weeks.

Agree with what you say. Wesleyan bench helped wear down AB guards. If a player falls, rolls, slides etc. traveling is not being called so everyone just jumps on the player and the ball. Happens too much and leads to chirping or worst. I think maybe the rule changed and needs to be returned to falling down is traveling most often.

AB is at least 10 points now then earlier in the season. They have not played well at Owensboro but I think they will surprise in the tourney.

I thought the guys calling the game were good but audio does have issues as well as video but I have seen the video issue with Wesleyan as well. It is well worth the price.

I really enjoyed watching the guys against Trevecca. They played hard and wanted to win at the end. Yes, we make mistakes. But they really try to play well together. Give Trevecca credit for hitting some tough shots the other day. Some of those 3's were deep.

I am concerned about Exzavier Cooper. He got hurt early in the 2nd and never returned. He looked in a lot of pain in his arm and wrist area. That would be a dagger to the season if he is lost. Hopefully nothing serious but he looked in great pain and he never returned to the game. If he broke his hand or something, then it would be tough to win another game.

AB snake bit this year. Malone has gotten better when on (threes) can beat most G-MAC teams.

Washington Adventist at home tonight. They are rated #16 in the latest NAIA poll. They won Sunday afternoon. Bridgeforth at 6'10" is impressive and a handful. Their guards are good.

We are currently one game ahead of D&E and two games ahead of Malone for the #2 seed. The Washington Adventist game has no bearing on any tie-breaker...win or lose. That Ohio Valley loss looms large.

The tie-breakers for final seeding are as follows:
              1) Head-to-head
              2) Record against opponents in the conference in descending order of standings in the G-MAC
              3) Overall record against D-II competition only.
              4) Coin toss if needed (which it won't by my calculations)

I believe if we beat Malone on Saturday, we lock up the #2 seed regardless of what happens against D&E. If we tied D&E: (1) we split head-to-head; (2) we beat Cedarville twice ; they lost to Cedarville once. That would do it right there for the most part. The only way it doesn't is if Ohio Valley beats Trevecca, KWC and Cedarville....all on the road. Then Ohio Valley would finish higher than Cedarville in the league standings and we would lose on the tie-breaker based on that fine loss over there. That is more than a reach though. Take care of business on Saturday, and we should be good to go.

If D2 record comes into play, we stand at 12-11 currently with 3 D-II games left. Our loss to WAU in January does not count. Malone is 9-10. They had 3 NAIA wins that don't count and 1 NAIA loss that does not count. Malone has 3 D-II games left including Salem and D&E on the road and us at home. D&E is 10-13 with two D-II games left. Their win over WV Tech does not count.

If Malone wins Saturday, then it does get interesting. They would then have to win at D&E and hope AB loses to Bluefield State and D&E. Malone also lost once to Cedarville. I think they would need to hope Ohio Valley wins out. If D&E beats both Malone and AB and AB loses at Malone, then they are the #2 seed.

We control our own path. I doubt Cooper plays tonight. That will be tough for the remainder of the season...but the kids did scrap hard the other day. However Malone and D&E are a step above Trevecca. They are 8-6 since getting the Graves kid eligible.

BTW, AB grad, former player and HOF Jeff Burkhamer help West Florida set a school record for conference wins the other day with 10. They added an 11th on Saturday with a win over Union. They are 16-7 overall. Unfortunately they lost their leading scorer 7 games ago and that really hurts. Jeff has done a good job down there in year two. They were 7-21 and 6-20 the two seasons prior to him taking over.

I watched Glenville the other day get a good road win at UC. He did a good job coaching them up. He is a tough draw in the MEC tournament. He ran the table two years ago and last year they had West Lib beat in the quarters, but a costly turnover on the last possession ended it.

Isaiah Francis of Beckley....a guy we offered....had a huge night last night in a big road win over Capital. He is a player.

I was curious so I checked....looks like Cooper might be good to go for tonight and sounds like he definitely will be for Malone. I won't give medical info out here other than that.

The future is definitely bright at AB. If Simmons was truly supposed to be the go to point guard this year then they will have him for four more years. Once Wade gets healthy and Bocook gets on the floor, there are two more capable guys to pair with Cooper, Mitchell, and Sanders
Heath is doing some good work it appears. Kevin Simmons tweeted this video today. That looks good in that he can go off that leg and throw it down already off of ACL surgery. Kid is a talent and would have been special this year. I was told Patrick Kennedy (kid out of Seattle) was progressing very well and can flat play some ball. Here is Simmons video where he commented it was his first dunk off that leg:

Excellent piece by WBOY on Jordan Haywood. I knew he was a walk-on. I did not realize he was a Promise Scholarship student; good for him. I had heard he was a good student. He did a good job on the interview:

We have offered Harford CC player Micah Till. They were the regular season champs of the MD JUCO league (22-7 and 12-2). He averaged 16 ppg and 7.8 rebounds and hit 34 three-pointers. Same JUCO as Cooper. He also went to Wise HS in Maryland. We have several Wise students up at AB. He has been offered by Virginia Union, Bowie State, Slippery Rock, West Chester and us. He was a three-star TE coming out of Wise (which is a MD high school power in football) and went to NC State. He got kicked off the team there for violation of team rules. I just wonder if he wants to play both sports. The kid at West Lib did it this year.

AB grad Jeff Burkhamer's West Florida team is ranked 6th in the South Region. They defeated Lee last night and have a big home game tomorrow against Shorter.

I am trying to convince my son to go with me tomorrow to alumni day. We will see.

Glad I saw it in person too. Very intense game from both teams. It is what a rivalry is about. D&E had a full contingent of students and older folks behind their bench. I thought our students were really into it. Both teams showed tons of guts and deserve a lot of credit. I can't say I ever saw a game like that went to four overtimes. It was impressive to say the least.

I thought Haywood's back-to-back 3-pointers in the first OT were unreal. Those were tough, clutch shots. We had only scored 1 point in the first 4:06 of overtime. We were down 7 with 54 seconds to go. Those were incredibly tough shots. And Sanders drained an incredible three at the horn in the first OT. Reggie hit a real tough shot in the end. That was all for him as Zimmerman motioned him over to take that on a dribble-drive from the right-side of the court after he caught it on the inbounds. Nothing too strategic about that.

I personally feel D&E is better than Trevecca. But how do they respond to that game will be interesting. That is a draining game and they have a long travel to get there where as Trevecca has a very short distance. Also the game is 10AM Thursday morning which means they would have to head out Wednesday morning at the latest. I am glad we got the extra day off after such a tough game. Regardless of what we do in this tournament, that game yesterday was certainly a nice touch on the season.

The women won a tough contest and qualified for the tournament. That is a good win as I think D&E's women are always solid. I am glad for Coach Tierney who I think is a class guy.

I enjoyed the alumni stuff. Speaking of alumni, Jeff Burkhamer's West Florida team picked up a big win yesterday over Shorter. UWF was 6th in the South Region heading into that game and Shorter was 7th in the South. Glenville looks like they get UVA-Wise on Wednesday night at the Civic Center and will play West Liberty on Friday night if they win Wed.
