Was their a year in which the champion was not one of the best teams in the country?
Our current champion was a 5 seed in SR 2 and had been playing football for 3 years before they won the NC. During their championship season, among their close games was a 6 point win over Mississippi College, a team that lost five games that year. Had they lost that game would that have made them less capable of winning it all?

Considering the final regional rankings come out before the regular season is over, how would we know who the top 7 in each region are? With the parity of this season (only 3 undefeated teams left in D2) there will probably be a few deserving teams left out in each region.

It changes from year to year. This year, a GMAC team may get in via Earned Access.

At what number of close losses is a team eliminated from playoff consideration?

1, just think how an undefeated CWU in D2 that only lost to Montana in a close loss was barely able to make the playoffs one year.

He wasn't talking about this year or any specific team, but the SIAC is normally everyone's punching bag on this one.

We had two DII losses in 2010 and stayed home. Lost to two eventual National Champs that year in EWU and UMD. Avenged the Humboldt loss later that year.

We didn't make the playoffs. While CWU was deserving, I don't think they got shafted.

I agree on that, although I was talking about the year after CWU made the SR final the first time. It really depends though on how other teams in your SR are doing though too and if they are beating each other up (like the current LSC), teams with more losses may have a chance.

There is some unfairness baked into the regions so that in one or two regions, a three loss team can sneak into the playoffs and in the others 2 losses is a death sentance.

Not to mention, what playoff format does actually get the best teams in? I also like the idea of Cinderella. It's always been fun watching the less funded programs get their shot and occasionally take down a team that others perceived as superior.

I got on board when it was just 4 teams from each region making the playoffs.

                                What year was that?
