If you think that's nuts, wait until you hear this! "Cal Poly" is actually "California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo." CPSUSLO is a great acronym.

Seriously though, it's pretty common knowledge that a school has an official name and then often has one that they use for branding. "University of Minnesota - Twin Cities" is often branded as "University of Minnesota," especially for athletics. We all know "University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign" simply as "University of Illinois." "University of Nebraska-Lincoln" brands both ways as UNL and "University of Nebraska." Some schools have several official names, and some schools maybe only have one or two but are known by a nickname. It's all valid, and nothing to get that worked up over.

A really weird one is "University of Mississippi" being branded as "Ole Miss."

There are all kinds of traditions there. When I was in HS they were known as the Gobblers.

            Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.
            Techs, Techs, V.P.I.
            Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah.
            Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia.

              • Well, at the very least, I should be thanked for jump starting a discussion about names, branding or not, of higher institutions. Don't we all like to learn things that are new to us? I sure do. You are all very welcome.

Had to write about them this week. Until now the only thing I knew about them is it’s where Weird Al went to college.

I just knew they were in San Luis Obispo and apart of the CSU family. Plus I like saying the name of the town.

I used the wrong "there." It's been a week.

Also, that's a pretty sweet chant. I like it. I watched a Virginia Tech game once, Marcus Vick was the QB. Haven't seen them sense.

There are three Cal Poly campuses now, Humboldt made the transition a couple of years ago. You might already know that, but if not...there ya' go! San Luis Obispo is a very nice and expensive city. I wanted to go to school there but they didn't have my major. I like SLO with the exception of Bubble Gum Alley, I think it's gross. There's a nice beach called Avila just a few miles away. And there's a landmark hotel built in 1958 called the Madonna Inn. So check them out if you're ever in the area. BTW, the late, great John Madden played football at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo back in the late 1950's. And a guy from my High School named Charles Daum played football there and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the early 1980's, but he was killed in an auto accident. I think he was on their practice squad at the time, but I'm not sure. And in 1960 the airplane carrying the Cal Poly Mustangs crashed in the fog over Ohio killing 22 people including 16 players. :(

I have never heard of Fresno State referred to as California State University, Fresno with or without the comma. Not only did the article title have it written that way, it was repeated 4 times in the article. The comma made it seem like California State University and Fresno (State?) are two different institutions.
Even in official NCAA documents, the "California State University, Fresno" naming is the legal name of the school (you'll also see Minnesota referred to as "University of Minnesota, Twin Cities", for example) as it is for most Cal State and UC campuses (San Jose State might be one of the exceptions, but don't quote me on that). And, yes, that includes the "University of California, Los Angeles" (which is the legal name of what most of us call "UCLA").

Now, if you want to talk about really stupid naming, you have SUNY Buffalo (legal name: The State University of New York at Buffalo, hence the references to "University at Buffalo" - and, yes, it's the same with Albany and Binghamton) and Buffalo State College, both of which are part of SUNY, within a few miles of each other. Now, that gets a little confusing.

If the PACifist 12-ish adds four more schools, then your wish might come true. While it would make a banging nickname for the new PACifist 10, I'm sure the potential legal issues with WWE would make it a non-starter. (Yeah, I know I had to be "that guy" in this part of the discussion, but it is what it is.)

All of UC uses the same naming scheme although Berkeley can be referred to as the University of California, UC-Berkeley, or just Berkeley. There might be some examples for other schools too that I'm not aware of.

As far as CSU goes, San Jose, San Diego, and Sonoma I believe are the three non-Poly schools that don't have the "CSU" name, but I could be wrong.

Now that I think about it, Long Beach might be one of them too though I'm pretty sure they're CSU-Long Beach

Minnesota is interesting because UMTC, UMD, UMC, UMR, and UMM all give out diplomas that only say "University of Minnesota." UMTC is actually two campuses smushed together too.

There's also Minnesota State University, Mankato - which is branded as Minnesota State University, MSU and MNSU, but because they have the city after the comma, many people refer to them as "MSUM," which is actually Minnesota State University-Moorhead. Fun stuff!

                              • Yes. California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), also known in athletics as Long Beach State University (LBSU)

They were the 49ers but are now known as the "Beach". They were brown and gold when I was in college but George Allen changed the colors to black and gold.
