Ferrum has been accepted into the 2-year membership process. They will play in Conference Carolinas for both seasons. https://www.ncaa.org/news/2025/2/12/...p-process.aspx

The release makes no mention of Middle Georgia, and the committee report isn't out yet.

I can't say that I'm shocked. I can think of a couple other of these "programs" out there which need to meet the same fate (coughcough Lincoln California coughcouch).

This is an interesting read with a lot of information. There are growing calls to move UNLV Hockey up to DI - which was expected. However I think it's interesting that it's become a hot ticket and they've outgrown their quaint little barn.

Even more interesting is the funding bit - it costs $700,000 to run the program, but the school contributes very little. Most of it is bank rolled by the Engelstad Foundation. Ralph is often associated with UND, but he was a casino boss in Vegas, so it makes sense.

I think the Rebs are a bit on their high horse after beating Denver though. It's absolutely an accomplishment worth celebrating, but their current roster would get creamed in a real DI schedule (IMO - debatable admittedly).

Remains to be seen what the direction of the program will be though.

I am shocked UNLV even fields a hockey team. I know Las Vegas has had the NHL for a few years, but still.....

We may as well face it- there will be a lot of changes in college athletics soon- and many not for the better. Schools shouldn't forget what their original purpose was.
This reminds me of the D2 school (Alderson Broaddus) which I followed for over 50 years that shut down a year and a half ago. They thought they could generate income by adding more sports and improving athletic facilities but it didn't work. And sadly their debt strangled them like a giant python. Sacramento State won't shut down, but they may be jumping the gun here. And I agree with your last sentence whole heartedly!

There is also a JC system.

The athletic issues at UCLA are not a part of the larger UCLA budget. The University gifted teh athletic department a large sum in order to help them weather the storm around the move to the BIG.

While the "main" UCLA is facing budget cuts, they also have a $3.9 billion endowment. They also should garner $60MM annually in BIG payments.
One more might be coming, a Cal State school in Palm Desert, CA. There's an extension campus for CSU San Bernardino there now and many locals want it expanded to a full blown seperate University. CSU Palm Desert or CSU Coachella Valley are the names most people bring up. I drive by there sometimes and hope I live long enough to see it become it's own CSU school with a basketball program. There's also an extension campus in Palm Desert for UC Riverside, but it's smaller. I love my Golden State and have seen it survive financial cutbacks several times in the past. It's going on all around the country but you hear about California the most because of all the schools, students and money involved. Ebb and flow...were survivors!

The BIG payments will help, but even Ohio State had an athletic budget deficit.

As far as endowments go, schools NEVER touch them, they just live off some of the interest. If they didn't touch them during COVID (which they didn't) as schools like Harvard were initially taking COVID money, and they have north of $50 billion.

Point is athletic budgets can't continue to operate in the red, and with "revenue" sharing coming next, that is another piece of the pie that will have to be accounted for.

Chip Kelly is a smart man who gets it. Not many coaches with his pedigree would leave where he was at to take a lesser role. He saw what a **** show UCLA was,and got out when he could. No money. Couldn't be competitive. Tired of all the bull**** as a head coach. But in the end he got a National Championship ring, so good call by him. I think eventually he gets back to the pros as an offensive coordinator.

In addition to men's volleyball, the GLVC will also begin sponsoring stunt as a sport starting next year, becoming (I believe) the second D2 conference to sponsor it after the G-MAC. Sponsoring members will be Drury, Lewis, Maryville, Quincy, and Southwest Baptist, plus East Stroudsburg as an affiliate. I've heard that Ferris State will also be joining as a stunt affiliate too, but I can't confirm that.
Stunt is one of those sports where you don't have to invest a lot of money (other than coaches) but you get a LOT more students paying tuition in return. Just a numbers game, and it is a female sport so that helps with Title IX.

Your tennis comment perked my interest.

Although the cross country trips suck, it doesn't affect other sports like tennis and volleyball as much as football.

Tennis and volleyball players are used to travelling to long road destinations multiple times a week/month at 8am and 9am start times for matches from middle school through high school so the match times and travel doesnt bother them nor the preparation.

It affects football the most because you dont have "football tournaments" and most football games are later in the afternoon or night.

Its easier for east coast teams to use gamesmanship against west coast teams in that regard by scheduling them for the noon eastern start times.
