  • Who is going to play D2? D1 scholarship changes

NCAA D1 has changed the amount of scholarships per sport

    https://sports.yahoo.com/new-college...210542040.html

not many power 4/5 can have 20 sports and cover the costs and staffing <athletic training, game administration, etc>

wonder if this will force d1 teams to come back down?

wonder if we will see conference change sports offering?

wonder if D1 will change counter sports and equivalencies sports at all

The ncaa increase here is the avoid employment lawsuits by

1)!having schools pay way too much in scholarship and increasing then benefits and what can be paid /offered to student athletes

2)!you can’t sue ncaa if my d1 does not have 55 scholarships/ etc

3)!net revenue and large squads only works if

    a) school athletic fee/ budget can cover having sport

B)! Ability to. Have walk ons paying full price to live on campus and play - the athletic fee does not cover expenses

C)!!having a minimum of 3 regular students paying full boat to cover cost of athletics.. schools with cheaper off campus housing/‘more commuter students

Going to be interesting on college d1 and d2 campuses

fyi - state of wv passed a campus concealed weapon law

students/facult/ staff on campus with a concealed weapons license/permit can bring a gun into a classroom and have it in a residence hall stored in there room or a specific area

you can’t have it at sporting events

    I will post law later

I don’t entirely see what the last bit has to do with D2 football. I’m curious about how the scholarship limits could affect FCS/D2 rosters. Truth be told I’m not sure it will change much since not every FBS school is going to go up to the scholarship limit. But if 30-40 do that probably pushes some guys who would be walk-ons to play elsewhere or quit entirely. Could that see some guys tumbling down to this level? Maybe but I don’t think we’ll get a huge increase in players wanting to be here.

Also worth noting that this settlement still faces obstacles and isn’t set in stone. For example per Sportico at least two state AGs (Montana and South Dakota) are pondering going to court to try and stop it on grounds that it’s costing their state schools immensely despite not being P5 schools. Others might try the Virginia/Tennessee route of filing in state court to stop the NCAA from enforcing it even if it passes ala NIL rules.

So much uncertainty. What I will say with revenue sharing is I don't understand how some of these small D1 schools, especially in the east, will be able to even afford a program like football.

Mercyhurst? Robert Morris? Saint Francis PA? I mean they are not even close to real D1 FCS schools like Youngstown State, South Dakota State, etc.

I don't necessarily see schools going back to D2, but I do see more football sub-divisions at the D1 level.

You could make an argument you need three levels of D1 football. The Power 5. Those with the real money and power. The middle schools. MAC Schools and then throw top level FCS schools, and then the remainder.

What's the point of being D1 if you are three or four rungs down from real D1? Isn't that just playing with words?

That's not a change. The vast majority of D1 outside the P4 is just pretending anyway. At least when it comes to football.

For a lot of those small D1 schools, they are only in it for men's hoop. Their women's hoop couldn't come close to winning anything. Same can be said for these football teams. But then they will play one of the big boys (SEC schools are notorious for this), and get a million+ payday to supplement the athletics programs.

I do like the proposal above about seven conferences in college football. I could argue anybody outside a Power 5 conference cannot afford revenue sharing. There is no revenue to share. They have no big TV contracts, and their athletic departments are already operating in the red. Honestly the Power 5 need to break completely away from the NCAA and do their own thing. It actually would help the rest of D1 schools who are having to pay money for this settlement. Taking from the poor and giving to the rich. Sad.

I agree, but most of general public, players, and parents, just fall in love with that D1 label. It's irrational, but a perspective that is almost everywhere.

Sad but true. Some of the top D2 programs could kick a number of D1 schools off the court or field. Ashland University has two track athletes in the Olympics, one of which has won gold before. She actually transferred from D1 to D2. Being D2 in no way hindered her athletic career or success at becoming the world's best. Some athletes and families get it, but they are certainly in the minority. Personally I would rather be a champion, regardless of level, than a D1 bottom feeder who never gets to enjoy success in their college career.
