Take a gap year/semester ... with this decision coming so late & school/fall camps about to start, only the best will be able to find spots by the end of the week.

As a Battlers fan I've been expecting the worst, but hoping for the best. That's better than most, who gave up on hope a long time ago. Losing athletics hurts, but I hope (there's that word again) that they'll be able to stay in business after the cutbacks. AB is my Mom's alma mater and I'd hate to see them shut down forever. Their debt is nearly $777,000. https://footballscoop.com/news/d-ii-...down-athletics

I don't know what the AB players can do this late in the summer, but I'm glad I've got Western New Mexico to fall back on. Time to elevate them to my favorite D2 team. This crazy world keeps spinning and life goes on...so I just changed my avatar. Go Mustangs!

The best players will get cherry-picked immediately. There's still some time for top players to find a home. Many, however, will probably sit this sports year out and start their process over.

AB has some good men's basketball players who should still be able to catch on somewhere.

Their utility debt to city of phillipi is $775k.
            Their liabilities are $37 million.
            Their income is $900k.
They were pleading for donations to make their current payroll and the upcoming payroll.
            imho their closure was inevitable.
            Sad.

Correct. Unfortunately this has been a slowly sinking ship that only recently got worse by the revelation about the unpaid utilities. A decade ago, they hired Creehan to use the D3 strategy of growing enrollment by expanding athletics. He brought on his brother to coach and eventually be AD and fulfill the plan (the net tuition revenue should exceed program expenses and create a net positive revenue for the university). That plan didn't happen fast enough and they needed emergency financing - but a condition of that emergency bond was that the president and finance VP had to resign. They did but things only got worse. Their accreditation was put on probation due to the school's finances and they only seemed to hover above trouble until now.

All the colleges closing right now are just like AB. Very small private (under 1,200 students). Very little endowment (a measure of donor capacity). High tuition discount rate (above 50% of sticker). No reputation outside their immediate area (no name recognition or leading academic programs). AB was able to keep its head above water because so many students were still paying some tuition to play sports there. Its just not sustainable for a school like AB in a place like Philippi, WV.
