How can Wheeling, a school of around 600 students that has only had a football program for several years be so much better than West Liberty. I'm starting to get a vision now, it's probably the coaching staff.

I have no idea what's happening on the hilltop, but man this isn't looking good at all! I know in previous years WL would get blown out here and there, but at least be competitive in most games and even pull out some wins every now and again, but now it looks like they've fielded a team that lacks talent all over and would struggle to beat top tier D3 schools (North Central, Cortland). I know the University doesn't like firing coaches, but man coach Waialae might be staring that fate in the eye soon. I like him as a person and as an ambassador of the school, but the football program has gotten to be unwatchable with darker days seemingly inevitable. I don't want to make assumptions and theory's on why he hasn't been let go, but something has got to be done, I mean soon!!!!Originally posted by Sportsnut View PostHow can Wheeling, a school of around 600 students that has only had a football program for several years be so much better than West Liberty. Soft coverage on 3 and 5...try soft coverage on every down and distance! Only thing worse than their DB play is their LB play and the only thing worse than their LB play is their DL play. Other that THAT, we are stacked in defense!!!! Even during our good years, our defense suuuukkkeeeddd. At least W can point to a few good seasons...our DC has NEVER had a good defense yet, he is still pulling down a paycheck!Originally posted by CelticCoach View PostThey still playing soft coverage on 3rd and 5?
On the good side, we did score 37 Saturday so...HAZZA to our offense! But don't be too proud of them. They did have FOUR turnovers including a pick 6...soooooo...
The eternal WLU question...Will THIS years abject football failure finally be enough to get the HC fired? I caution...History says NOOO!!

What's his salary? I'd guess it's at least low six-figures. He's not going to leave at his age unless terminated.Originally posted by TopperNation View PostI've almost given up on the possibility of the coach being fired anytime soon, but you would think the coach would see that the program needs a new leader! I mean for the love of the game, just resign!
As they say, if somebody is dumb enough to pay you ... take their money.
Or, somebody is terrified of this guy.

Yeah, I'd imagine with what they're paying him it would make no sense for him to resign, so he mine as well continue on getting blown out by schools like Frostburg State, who's only been in D2 for 2 + years now, or Wheeling who started fielding a football team in 2019! It was mentioned before, that because of his connections with some of the donors that have deep pockets, WL would be reluctant to fire him for fear of losing that financial backing. I can't confirm if that is true, but man oh man there has got to be a reason that they are keeping a consistently underperforming coach (That's putting it lightly), who would've been let go at mostly any other school. Myself and many others vowed not to return to see another WL football game until changes are made to the head coaching position. I know we aren't huge donors, but we do make a dent in the financials lol.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View Post

You'd think so but some people just aren't wired to have any shame. If it were me and I failed at my job year after year after year, I would quit out of shame and embarrassment. I would imagine he has enough time to retire but I guess he feels like if they are foolish enough to continue paying him to fail, he's more than willing to take it.Originally posted by TopperNation View PostI've almost given up on the possibility of the coach being fired anytime soon, but you would think the coach would see that the program needs a new leader! You're exactly right! You would also think with the men's basketball team having so much success that it would shine a light on just how bad the football program has been. You want proof that matters, just take a look at Duke University! I know it's D1, but for years Duke had the worst football program in the country until the administration had taken enough. They changed coaches and found someone that could recruit and bring in some talent. It starts at the top!Originally posted by boatcapt View Post
