OT - NCAA Wrestling Championships
I know March Madness is happening but the NCAA D1 Wrestling Championships are going on at the Rocket Arena in Cleveland. ESPN+ is carrying every bout, e.g., in the round of 32 right now that amounts to 160 individual matches. They will carry every bout through the consolations down to the championship matches. It's on 8 mats and each one is on ESPN+. If you don't follow college wrestling take a look. The skill level at this level is outstanding. It's not like your old high school matches. And if you went to school in PA there is a good chance somebody from your high school is competing.Comment

Always used to love to go up to the Pa. state tourney when I was covering high school sports It's quite a spectacle to watch four mats of top-end kids going for it at the same time. In Cleveland, they are wrestling the placement matches for 3rd place now, so all that remains are the NCAA finals which will air on ESPN today at 6:30 ET.
Penn State has again run away with the team title and they have 6 wrestlers in the finals. In 2nd place is Oklahoma State, let by former PSU assistant coach and wrestler David Taylor. He is in his 2nd year as coach of the Cowboys. Can he overcome his former coach and boss at PSU in the coming years? Time will tell.
As for the PSAC schools competing, the only points scored came from Wyatt Henson of Lock Haven, who earned All-American status with an 8th place finish at 141 pounds. That enabled LHU to place in a tie with Wisconsin for 37th place in the team standings.Comment

Another chapter in West Chester's takeover of PASSHE. Two provosts ago was interim president at Penn West. Last president became system chancellor. Last provost became interim and is now permanent president at Commonwealth. I guess that's better than Hanna.

Yeah, so much for diversity, right? But I would want the best administrator and someone who has the potential to lead innovation and someone who has the people skills to lead the diversity of constituencies. Current Commonwealth president was permanent provost at West Chester before being named interim president at Commonwealth. He's an expert in public administration, which is a plus compared to other academic disciplines, but the jury will be out for some time.Comment

Temple University is retaining far fewer students from freshman to sophomore year than it did a decade ago, according to a new report. This retention issue comes as the school faces increased budget pressures.

Retention is a hard metric to diagnose because its different for everyone. Its long been associated with student satisfaction, but that's far less reliable with each generation. Granted, if the school is desirable enough, students put up with a lot of crappy experiences. When they settled on your school, they complain more and are less willing to put up with bad parking, bad food, bad experiences, etc. Its one reason PASSHE schools have lower retention rates. But retention also covers changes in plans, changes in needs, and students running out of resources.
Want to change your major and your current school doesn't have it? You hurt retention.
Decide college isn't for you after all and want to enlist? You hurt retention.
Mom diagnosed with cancer or dad dies unexpectedly and want to be closer to home? You hurt retention.
Get pregnant and need to take time off? You hurt retention.
Realize going to a school in a city isn't for you? You hurt retention.
Thought you could work your way through school like dad but you run out of money? You hurt retention.
The only big changes that don't hurt retention is a student getting drafted/deployed into active military and a student dying.
Although I'd argue that Temple doesn't have the cache it once did and is falling out of favor. Everyone knows its neighborhood can be difficult. Its also living under the shadow of Penn State, Rutgers, Maryland, and possibly even Delaware. I'd chalk it up to a school that was able to grow and expand to a place that's no longer sustainable. Similar to what's happening at WVU.Comment

I didn't read the article because I'm not paying $1 for 6 months of the Inky. However, my suspicion is that "retention" is not the issue with Temple. Maybe retention is down, but that is a consequence of other issues. More along the lines of mismanagement, financial and other.Originally posted by IUPNation View Post
Expectations for the school probably were not in line with reality. Temple tried to change who they were. From the time when their focus was primarily seen as a refuge for students from the city itself, through all the growth it's experienced over the years, it is perhaps trying to compete on a level which it can't. You could say that Temple will always be Temple. Sorry Temple.Comment

Saw this in a higher ed siteEnrollment declines are often the source of a college's financial weakness. At Temple University, sliding retention rates are also contributing, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer, based on an internal report it obtained. While 90 percent of Temple's freshmen returned for their sophomore year a decade ago, projections indicate that the retention rate will fall below 80 percent this fall.
Enrollment is also a concern, though. The institution has enrolled its largest freshman classes in each of the last two years, but the longer-term trend is more sobering: There was a 27-percent drop in enrollment between 2017 and 2025, the paper reported. The current fiscal year is forecast to end in a $27-million deficit, which the university will plug almost entirely with financial reserves. An expected deficit of about $85 million for the next fiscal year means Temple “must act decisively and with a sense of urgency,” the president said earlier this month.Comment
