I wouldn't hold your breath ... but today is the official deadline.
Football testing would be a nightmare!!!

It's over, Johnny. If they couldn't even get 6 schools to play basketball ... football has ZERO chance.

The only real conversation now will be who stays and who goes. They may need to hire a salary cap specialist to figure this out. That said, I'm not optimistic there will be a Fall '21 season, either.

If there was ever a time to get that scholarship limit maxed ... this is it. Get your checkbooks out, friends.

There will be a Fall 21 season if the vaccination is out on the market as they are expecting it to be next month. The first batch would be given to the first responders, the second batch to those with underlying health issues and those living with someone with underlying health issues, and the third batch probably in late spring early summer 21 would be the rest of the population 25 and under.

Exactly. We know this by using the same methods for which some of us were called fearmongers earlier this year and still today. Read the news. Listen to the experts. They told us the dangers now they are showing us the way out. Everything should be back with a bang by the 4th of July (note that Trump never said which 4th of July).

Having said that, Fauci has also said it's going to hang around in the background. There will still be some precautions e.g. international travel. A lot depends on how many people get the vaccine.

Looking forward to a big year next year for the Crimson Hawks!

I am new to the group but had a few thoughts on the PSA not playing in the spring and PSAC football in general. As you can tell by my name, I have a son who plays in the PSAC. All fall we were told "we want to play and are setting a schedule". When playing in the spring came up as a topic, I told all players there was no way there would be PSAC football. While other schools published schedules, ours lacked leadership. While other conferences tried to find a way to play, ours was concerned about lying to student-athletes about their intentions just to keep players from transferring and keep them on campus when/where allowed. The announcement was finally made to few people's surprise there would be no spring football. I spoke with several other ad's from a couple school who have working knowledge of the PSAC, they both said there was no intention to play and this decisions was simply made as a cost savings issue and logistics issue. No, there is no guarantee they will be playing next fall but how spring sports are treated will determine a lot. there are numerous kids at my son's school as well as his friends who play elsewhere in the PSAC who are planning to leave to play in conferences that actually play. No, there was no elig. lost this year or even if 5 games were played which was the original lie about spring football. Schools that have not already canceled which is nearly every conference, is reaping the rewards in recruiting. I know Gannon, Mercyhurst, and Seton Hill wanted to play and still do, hopefully they'll leave the PSAC soon so they can be in a real athletic conference. If anyone in the PSAC actually pays attention to this site, I hope they realize there is a mass exodus from PSAC schools and sports based on their poor decisions.

While Covid is real and dangerous (i've known 4 people who have died directly from the disease), it is the same disease that can be transmitted shopping, dining, working, etc) DI schools have played and yes, it has caused games to be cancelled and schedules to be shortened but that can be done in the PSAC too correct? If DI can schedule and cancel when needed and play when able, I'm confused as to why our athletes aren't as respected by their conference or school? If the conference wanted to play, athletes could have had the option to op in, if they didn't want to play, the players could opt out. As the quality of the schools decrease due to years of poor fiscal management (I was a PSAC athlete and grad), so does athletics. This conference is no where to the level it was when I played in it as well as the quality of coaches and the leadership of the conference. As the conference continues to make financial decisions based on lying to their student athletes, they will be begging for kids to come and play in a couple years.

I'd agree with you it was just a smoke show coming out of the main office.

That said, I'm not expecting many teams in D2 to play this Spring.

D1 has played ... but, there's real money involved there. Down here in the bus leagues ... there isn't.

Any school can play if they want to ... finding any games may be the bigger challenge.

That's interesting you mention Seton Hill wanting to play because they just voted 'no' to playing basketball.

Just last week the league needed just 6 teams to have a basketball season. Only 4 voted to play (Clarion, IUP, Gannon and Mercyhurst).

It just sucks for everybody ... students, fans, parents, etc.

I also agree many will transfer out. But, that's nothing new. They'll just replace departures with imports.

It's not for a lack of desire. It's a lack of money.

The NCAA requirement that all players, coaches, and trainers must be tested 3x a week is the dealbreaker. That's 90-120 people at $30-40 per test, three times a week. The money isn't there.

On top of that, increased travel costs to space out everyone, 12 of the 16 football schools aren't allowed to have spectators, and I believe some coaches who would rather plan for a fall that more closely resembles the usual.

Good for them. I hope they do play in some capacity. At the very least they should be able to have games against Mercyhurst and #LIT-AF.

Although not directly related to the PSAC but it does concern all DII players, is anyone familiar with the transfer portal? Can you specify the schools you are interested in transferring to? Does your current school recind the current scholarship you are on at the end of the academic year if you enter the portal? Can you remain at your current school if no one makes an offer you take? Do you specify the division you want to play at? My son had a couple small DI offers but chose DII to hopefully play sooner. If we are forced to decide based on spring sports in the PSAC, it would be nice to have some info before going down this road with his school's AD.

If you tell your current school you want to enter the portal, they have to put you in within 24 hours.

In most cases, entering the portal is essentially a death sentence at your current school. They aren't interested in you testing the waters for greener pasture.

You don't specify anything. It's a portal accessible to coaches of all levels. They will contact the player - legally - once in the portal if they are interested. The player can also directly contact schools to see if they are interested.

The portal will be completely flooded with players.

The major fear is at D1. Mid-level programs (like, say, Pitt) are terrified they will get gutted due to kids not losing a year this current season ... and want to try and land at a more prolific place.

Unless your a magnificent superstar at the D2 level ... once you go in the portal your current school is done with you. You'll be deemed somebody who doesn't want to be there and would be seen as an attitude risk if they'd keep you around. Minus the mega-star, players are easily replaceable at this level. Transfers galore are available.

And, to be honest, at the elite D2 programs ... they are always looking for upgrades at nearly every position.

The example I'll give you is IUP and it's QB position. A few years back they signed two highly-touted QBs out of high school. The next two years they signed D1 imports at QB. One of those high school kids left for West Chester. The other stayed and in considered a big underdog to get the job this (next) year.

Scholarships are good for one year. That's the part people don't talk about much but a school can dump a recruited player at any time. A fancy D1 transfer becomes available ... somebody is getting bumped out (or, off money at least).

Sounds like your son is in a tough spot. I'm not confident any D2 will play Spring ball. Some are still talking about it but the whole Northeast is just exploding with the virus right now.

I note that the current (??) NCAA testing strategy talks about "pooled sampling" as an effective cost mitigation strategy. In pooled testing, all the players in a functional practice group and the coaches in the "inner bubble" would pool their tests together for a bulk test. If this test comes back negative, all members in that group are negative. If this bulk test comes back positive then at least one member of that test group would be positive with individual testing necessary to determine who that person(s) is. So if a team had five functional practice groups, that would cut the in-season testing cost for a 5 week season from $72,000 (120x40x3x5) to $3,000 (5x40x3x5).

Yeah...I read about that at the start of the pandemic when the testing capacity wasn't there. It's a way to get more people tested.

Of course, the rate of positivity now is like 9-11% so chances are you're going to get more positives and have to test everyone anyways. But, in theory it does save costs and better use of scarce resources.

From the gossip I've heard, several teams are discussing playing scrimmages this spring. If you take weather and the start of the semester into account, I'd figure March is the sooners any scrimmages would take place. Also, they're scrimmages so any rules can be applied as long as all agree ahead of time. Also, they're scrimmages....so they don't have to be conference teams playing each other either. Got to keep the kids engaged, got to attract new potential players, got to have the coaches earn a paycheck....
