  • OT: Tyson vs Paul

I had a faint hope this was a real fight right up until the weigh-in.

Mike's going to make about $20m tonight.

        Win, lose or draw.

They’ve done a heck of a job selling it. Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic is a fight people have wanted for a long time and outside of the hardcore MMA crowd no one is talking about that fight happening on Saturday because Paul-Tyson is taking all the headlines.

By his own admission, Tyson has been doing little more than smoking weed and taking mushrooms the last several years. The idea he could get ready to fight for real in a few months, at 58 years old, was always laughable. They’ll circle each other, talk trash and look mean for 8 rounds. They’ll have a couple of exchanges to try to make it look good. Then they’ll hug it out and laugh about the money they made.

In WWE terms, Paul is a fantastic heel. No denying.

And, yes, they'll both laugh all the way to the bank.

Maybe it will surprise us. But, I doubt it.

Make sure to watch the interview Tyson did with a young girl yesterday. It was off the charts. Vintage Tyson. Even the young girl looked at him like he was insane. LOL.

Part of me would like to see them go at each other legitimately. The other part of me knows it would end badly for Mike and I would hate to see that.

Jake Paul plays his character very well, but I don’t believe he wants to embarrass Mike Tyson. And he sure as hell doesn’t want to put himself in danger of being knocked out by a 58 year old man. I’ll watch for the spectacle of it, but I do not expect to be enthralled by the action.

I'd hate to see this look like what Evander Holyfield's last fight did.

Jake is a big, roided-up dude. He has all the money in the world and has paid for world-class training the past 4 years. I'm not saying he's some great technical boxer but he does have legit power.

You know the 'heel' is working well when Mike Tyson somehow becomes America's Sweetheart.

Paul's whole run almost reminds me of Andy Kaufman. He's done great selecting aged-out, smaller, former 'names'. Tyson is different in many ways, obviously. But, he's still 58 years old.

I remember Apollo Creed's last fight. This isn't a sport for the elderly. The hope is Mike can actually land one big punch. But, he'd have to do it early. He's going to tire out real quick.

Paul’s fought a couple of guys with combat sports experience but none of them was a real boxer (and he’s conveniently avoided the most notable striker type from UFC, McGregor, who also does these showy fights). I think he has some actual talent and I’m a bit curious what he’d look like in an alternate reality where he came up a boxer but I expect tonight’s bout to be a show more than a fight. I won’t go so far as to call it fixed or staged but I understand why some states aren’t allowing action on it.

I think we'll eventually see him fight McGregor. But, he's still under UFC contract and Dana won't allow it. So, it won't happen until he's released. By then Paul could be largely irrelevant.

All of the has-beens he's fought from the MMA world were free agents per se and no longer under UFC contract. They were still name-worthy and made for appealing (money making) events.

End of the day tonight is a spectacle and everybody is talking about it. That's good for business.

Paul just weighed in at 220 for this fight. McGregor at his biggest was in the 170 class I think.

I think Jake usually fights at around 190 lbs (that's what the scale hits on weigh-in night, anyway).

McGregor is all jacked up now. I wonder what he weighs currently.

The theory going around is Dana can't give him any fights because he can't get past the drug testing (most assume roids / PEDs). Something is obviously up because he's far and away their biggest draw.

I think Jake Paul is 'roided' out of his mind.

I didn’t realize Paul was so much heavier than McGregor. In that case I’m not sure I could see them fighting because I imagine a lot of the state athletic commissions wouldn’t sanction it as a real match. Maybe they could do it as an exhibition though. I also forgot that McGregor was still under contract given that he hasn’t fought in a couple years and frankly hasn’t scored a noteworthy win in almost a decade.
