How does the ALL Conference get selected I heard that the Head Coaches vote and several players are nominated for ballot from each team. Do Head Coaches have stats in front of them? I know some positions stats dont always tell the story but I cant help but notice that several players were left out including Zach Malpica Defensive End/Edge LB from Edinboro left off of DL all conference. Not trying to undervalue the young men selected but I will post stats for all and you tell me what you think?

RED INDICATES LOWER STATS THEN MALPICA
    GREEN STATS HIGHER THEN MALPICA

    PSAC West 1st Team DL
Player Total Tackles Tackles for a loss Sacks Less in all 3 Stats
    Charles Calhoun Gannon 40 9.5 4.5 X
    Todd Hill Slippery Rock 56 13 6.5
    Munchie Johnson Slippery Rock 48 13 3.5
    Julien Laventure California 29 6.5 4.5 X
    Jake Tarburton Clarion 43 13 7
    PSAC West 2nd Team DL
    Armani Caraballo California 27 10.5 9
    Josh Cohen Seton Hill 35 9.5 4.5 X
    Maurice Feazell IUP 44 14.5 7.5
    Owen Kling Clarion 16 3 0.5 X
    Josh Miller California 27 6.5 3.0 X
    LEFT OFF
    Zach Malpica Edinboro 50 12 5.0
Out of 10 Selected he was 2nd in total tackles, 5th in TFLs, 5th in Sacks
5 players he had higher totals in all 3 categories 2 on 1st team and 3 on 2nd team

Obviously I'm biased he is my son but i have been playing and coaching football my whole life at every level no one is more critical and realistic about him than me. Make this make sense to me please! All these athletes work hard but this young man plays so hard and works so hard on gameday in practice and in the weight room. HE would trade all of these accolades in a second if it meant his team would win won their games. Maybe cuz Edinboro had such a rough roller coaster year I dont know.

Stats certainly look up to par. The teams at the top of the division (Rock, Cal, IUP) are given more weight typically. Edinboro struggled, it's as simple as that most likely.

As you said, stats don't tell the whole story sometimes.

Correct. The best CBs in the league typically have the least stats. Nobody throws near them. Stats don't tell the whole story.

Well he isnt a DB I understand that logic but on DLINE a TFL and Sack is what it is....trust me he was avoided and doubled quite a bit otherwise his tackles would have been even higher.any d lineman with over 40 tackles in a season is elite usually the schemes are made for them to eat blocks and let the LBs get the tackles.

Well they beat IUP, lost to Slippery Rock by 5 points came down to end of game and Cal game they were neck and neck the whole game and he had 7 tackles 3 TFLs and a sack against CAL....this is one thing that is actually an individual award shame that team losing a few heartbreakers affects a pplayers performance...the Fact that another player Wilfredo Diaz leads all college all classifications in the COUNTRY with 150 tackles and he wasnt defensive player of the year is hilarious...at least he was 1st team all psac they got that right

I agree with you on Diaz. Almost every week I'd watch him make plays and tell myself he's probably going to be PSAC West DPOY. Todd Hill (Slippery Rock) is a fine player but I'm not sure how that happened. His best stat was 4th in the PSAC West for sacks. He tied for tops in the west for solo TFL but didn't even register in the top 200 for total tackles nationally. Happy for him but I agree this should have been Diaz's award.

Some things that probably hurt Diaz is that he is tied for 14th in the west for total TFL and had just 1.5 sacks, but I blame the latter on Edinboro not seeming to blitz much this year.

Blame the fact that they are 3-8. 11th in the conference in PPG allowed, 8th in total yardage allowed. Total tackles, IMO is a stat that is inflated or deflated depending on the stat keeper. There are a lot of guys on the teams that don't do as well with huge tackle totals. I'm not trying to imply that this Diaz guy isn't worthy, just offering another vantage point here. On paper, the other coaches voting see the leading tackle guy on a 3-8 defense.

The real reason he probably didn't win is because he wasn't enough of a difference in your losses to Clarion, Millersville and Gannon. Those teams are terrible with a total record of 7-25 between them.

I agree with Rams0405, you can't lose that many games and then expect to get everyone on 1st or 2nd team! It's tough, coach fight for their players but if Cal, Or Slippery Rock have a guy, well they will get it!! A lot of deserving guys didn't get noticed, o well!
