The upper end of fcs ( the big sky, Missouri valley , colonial, and socon) top four or five teams are a threat to beat a lot of FBS schools. The bottom end s are not very good at all.

Really excited about the non-conference games coming back on the schedule.

I wonder if any MIAA would be open to playing FCS school again? UNK has played South Dakota State, Central Arkansas, Portland State, Southern Utah and Cal Poly through the years.

Most of those schools were D2 when UNK played them. I think their only D1 games were against Central Ark and Drake.

It was 89. The first year Pitt moved up from NAIA.
Swmsu was a 1AA playoff team that year and Pitt beat em by 21 points. 47-26.
It was like 20 plus years before they would play another decent d2 team.

Broyles used to tell the story that they found the SWmo playbook in the trash the night.before the game . No idea if he was BSing or not. Funny either way.Lol.

peak miaa days. those were both really good wburn & central teams. at least central was.....wburn was always up & down. & yes i was referring to missouri state, they were sms when pitt beat them, mid to late 90s some time. i'm guessing they were middle of the road or worse when they lost both times b/c they've typically been of that ilk for many years. illinois state i think has had some good yrs but i'd be willing to bet they weren't any better than middle of the pack which is still a pretty good football team given the league they play in.

When you say SMS, I assume you're referring to Southwest Missouri State, now Missouri State. I remember Washburn going to Springfield and beating Missouri State and UCM losing by one point at Illinois State. The 1aa schools in our area are now apparently afraid of the MIAA.

I'd even go so far as to say that the better teams in d2 can hang pretty well against the better teams in FCS. That Ferris State-Montana score last year was a lot closer than I imagine Montana would've liked.

if the d1aa mails it in it is possible to compete & that's a good example of that but those upsets actually happen so infrequently it's probably not worth discussing.

just watch the 1aa playoffs. there's a big difference in the upper echelon of d1aa vs the top end of d2. which you'd expect. given the scholarship discrepancy how could there not be.

i do think in the past we had the chance that a really good d2 could pop up every so often w/ an inordinate amount of d1 talent - & of course such a team would basically never get to prove it due to the odds of it happening & having a d1aa big boy scheduled in the same season are virtually nil. & in addition to that with transfer rules now such a team will probably never turn up in d2 again.

as an aside my expectation is that dynasties are probably a thing of the past. the usual suspects will still win titles but our 2015 team for example would have been picked apart in 2022 preventing 2016 & 3 in 4 yrs from ever happening making us retool earlier.

pitt beat sms one yr when i was in college iirc. there have been others i’m not remembering i’m sure. the better teams in d2 do well against the d1aa chaff they are wise to stay away. teams toward the top of course would destroy all of us but there’s a lot of garbage in 1aa we can run with.

It's usually the FCS schools who don't want to play a D2.
