Leach had success because he brought a revolutionary new scheme to the Big 12. For a while it was indefensible. Now most of the Big 12 runs some variation of that scheme and defends it.

As for coach versus coach, Leach is no football genius, but KK makes him look as one.

Tech got swept up in the A&M hype when they caught lightning in a bottle for a season with Manziel. Suddenly Sumlin and anyone associated with him were hot commodities, including KK. As it turns out, it was just a one-year flash fire started by Johnny Football and there wasn't much substance there on the coaching front.

Tech also got caught up in the "bring back a real Tech guy" syndrome. Schools often fall into this trap. There is an emotional attachment to anyone who played at the school and there is an idea that they have special Jedi powers to resurrect the program because "they get it." Added to that was KK's GQ cool factor, which was another hot fire that burned for a while.

When you get rid of all that noise, he's a really poor coach.

Apples and oranges. Two different conferences. Leach got a cupcake north schedule every other year, plus 1 less conference game, where Kliff faces everyone each season with an extra conference game. Overall Conference is much tougher now than during Leach's tenure. You replace Colorado with WVU, A&M with TCU. You lost Nebraska, but play an extra conference game each year to offset that. Plus the rise of Baylor, etc., etc., etc.

You realize you are trying to compare a coach who only had 1 losing in Conference season and that was his first in 10 years to a coach that has never had a winning in conference season in 5 years?

Correct a total of $30M on TOP of the existing facility. And WT is building from scratch for $38M.

Hopefully, fingers crossed, he will be long gone before 2024 and schedule can be adjusted. No offense, Tech is really waivering on being also ran like Kansas. The last thing we need is an embarrassing loss from a weak FCS program.

He's not doing anything different than Leach did. That's the only reason Leach's record looks like it does. He was notorious for scheduling FCS cupcakes. Heck one year, they played TWO in one season.

Look at in Conference records of the two coaches. Obviously, Leach was doing something different.

Michael, Tech did play UNM for years. It was an awful one sided affair. Rarely was UNM competitive. NMSU and UTEP are the same distance as Norman and Stillwater. TCU in Ft Worth is the closest school to Tech.

In Michael's defense, when he was in school the world was flat, so calculated distances may have been different.

Since the Red Raiders of Lubbock are sorta isolated from the rest of the Big XII (-2) out in the south plains of west Texas, perhaps schools like UNM, NMSU, & UTEP, due to close proximity, would be more natural rivals. TT has played the Lobos infrequently in recent years. Have also played UTEP & NMSU once or twice in recent years as well.
