I'LL PASS!! I will put all my efforts on RECRUITING HS studs and potential studs. The guy 10 lbs too lite or 2" too short to be considered by FBS/FCS. And those diamonds at 2A, etc....
Totally agreed and my comment about D2 power 5 players was super sarcastic (should have added a winky face).

I think it has to be a 50/50 mix because said HS recruiting system is also vulnerable to losses to other teams.

Fact! Look at Angelo. Girsch found diamonds in the rough, coached them up and lost them to the portal. Over and over. But each one moved UP. Not lateral or down.

Maybe the key is taking a shot at recruiting D3 studs??

There are a whole bunch of D3 players at ETBU, HSU, and UMHB that are plenty good enough to be ball'n at any D2 school. But they are already on scholarship where they are.

So were all the players that entered the portal.

A good recruiter could poach D3 players for sure.

ASUPops Difference is (I think) the D3 players are on full academic scholarship and very few d2 players will be offered a full scholarship since most of them are partials.

Again just my opinion (might be antiquated).

Furthest thing from the truth. This is a fallacy that has been tossed around this board for years and years. And everyone "knows someone" on a "full" at a D3.

Since 2000, I've had dozens 9f players go D3. Not a single one received a "full academic scholarship". All received some sort of scholarship, other than athletic (academic or need-based), and then grants, Hazelwood Act, loans, etc. So...did the player have to "come out of pocket", no, but did majority wind up with student loan debt? Yes.

DIII recruiting is different from DII. Coaches try to find either high academic recruits or the financially lower class recruits so they can get $$ for the recruits.

Many DII schools look for alternative routes as well in recruits. I knew of numerous WT, Angelo, Tarleton, and Commerce recruits that fell under the Hazelwood Act and didn't count towards their athletic scholarships. And I am talking TOP players.

Yeah the schools are helping them load up with student loans. It's really somewhat of a sham. I am aware of a "player" at Hardin-Simmons that was recruited out of high school. Big signing day celebration etc. Three years in, he was still on the "JV" and the family figured out they'd been had. Meanwhile, "Johnny" now had $73,000 in debt, even after his scholarships of various kinds.

The athletes are sucked in to the sales pitch that they are legit college athletes (most are not), and they will get a shiny new uniform, their own locker, and finally have their day in the sun, when everyone else overlooked them.

HSU is running this charade and it's keeping the doors open. They have something like 200 kids on the football squad, which represents about 20 percent of their undergrad enrollment. A lot of these kids frankly have zero business in college. Couldn't win a first-grade spelling bee. It's sad really. But I blame mom and dad as much as I blame the school, for being so stupid, themselves.

There should be some regulation on these schools though. The school should not exist simply because they are defrauding suppose-d athletes that are not fit academically.

On the flip side, the HSU varsity would easily hang with anyone in the LSC for the same reason. They've got a bunch of ballers who can't get in anywhere else. Most of these guys will exhaust their eligibility and have nothing to show for it, or a worthless piece of paper in exchange for their student debt.

Remember the 60s Coach Kerbel recruited the Pennsyvania area hard thats where he found Pedro Pete and Mercury Morries. Carthel recruited Calif.

Dalton went on to the Canadian League for a short while.

It’s particularly frustrating me because I am from Midland/Odessa and I view WT as a state university for this area. When my daughter graduated high school WT offered $2k in scholarships and Tech offered $3k. WT responded that they could offer more if we lived in one of 26 panhandle counties. My wife and I both graduated from WT in the 90s. This panhandle university crap is harming enrollment. My daughter is a student at Tech.
Exactly,,, this President is limiting WT in all areas. Wake up everyone

I did more research last night and saw there are just as a limited amount of 5A D1 schools west of I-35 as 6A.

It will be difficult to beat out Tarleton and Commerce now for most kids for obvious reasons.

Like I said and multiple have disagreed with me (which is of course, ok) but excuses are gone for this year at least as you can build the team you want if you are willing to go portal shopping.

Unless a LSC school just raids the second string from Georgia or Ohio State, then things should be fairly equal in portal shopping which will boil down to can you coach?

I may disagree with the ways but I am rooting for Lynn and WT to be successful.

If he cant get it done with 7+ wins this year, its time to cut ties.

Its starts at the top as most places.

If the President is incompetent in athletics knowledge/workings and passes that on down the chain, then it makes things extremely difficult.
President ran SIU into the ground so WT hires him go figure.

Interesting fact about Kerbel...he started recruiting black athletes. Few colleges in Texas were recruiting black athletes in the 1960s. That gave WT a huge boost in the W column for a number of years.

Bill Kelly recruited California JUCOs heavily and had success. Carthel recruited a lot of ballers that were not students and/or had off-the-field problems.
