  • East Texas A&M Football

Was looking at some of the ex LSC teams schedule for this year. East Texas opening at SMU and next game at Florida St. Wonder how much cash they are being given to play those two schools. At a WT fan I would like to see us move up a notch football just not same anymore since Carthel was fired, the New Stadium was going to do wonders.. etc etc.

WT played Florida back in the 90's. The score was something like 80-6. A real contest.

ET A&M is likely being paid $350K to $515K by FSU and SMU. While I cannot find contract details specific to East Texas, Florida State is paying East Tennessee $515K to come to Tallahassee in 2027. The contract with SMU hasn't been disclosed, but it likely less than payments by Florida State, given the fact that FSU has triple the attendance of SMU, as well as a considerable media contract.

1983. Florida won 77-14. But WT led 14-3 at the end of the first quarter!

Your searching for the feelings you gad in the "good old days". Those are ling gone memories, and WT football will never bring that feeling back for you. It's just the times and circle of life.

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
              Oh, I believe in yesterday

Suddenly, I'm not half the jerk I used to be
There's a shadow beard hanging over me
              Oh, yesterday came suddenly

Why WT had to go D2
              I don't know, they wouldn't say
              They said something's wrong
              Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday, D1 was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
              Oh, I believe in yesterday

WT was essentially kicked out of the Missouri Valley Conference. New Mexico State and North Texas had left the MVC and the rest of the members could have cared less about coming to the Panhandle of Texas to play us. Tulsa said they would not come to Canyon to play us in football any more and if we didn't like it we could leave. With a struggling athletic budget the choices were to go independent or go Lone Star conference. The Lone Star wanted us. Some supporters wanted to drop football but still the MVC was not interested. It wasn't that all options were not looked at or it was some secret cabal at work. It was what was feasible at the time. D1 wasn't that easy of a game to play then or now. I personally had a conversation with Gene Mayfield several years before we went to the Lone Star and he said then, that is where WT would end up. It was a passing comment he made just in a conversation.

I think Jake said like, $12MM 🙂 But that’s probably a little high. But the athlete experience will be second to none.

                    Some great points.

WT also looked pretty seriously at a conference that was, at the time, called the Gulf Star. It was a 1-AA conference, but more oriented to teams near the Gulf. I believe that Lamar and SHSU were in it, among others. But that conference was going to require 500+ mile road trips to every conference game. Wasn't going to work.

As you mentioned, the Missouri Valley was no longer viable. The remaining members were in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and then Tulsa. That wasn't going to work either.

There were at the time some natural rivals in the Lone Star that WT had played over the years. Angelo State and Abilene Christian. Much of the rest was half a day's drive from Canyon. So the conference, even though D2, made the most sense. WT's geographic isolation plays as much a role in what division and conference they are in than anything else. If the Lone Star was FCS, or was NAIA, WT would probably still be in it, because there would be no other viable alternatives except perhaps the Heartland or RMAC.

So nobody wanted to go to Amarillo. Not Surprised. I hated playing up there in high school.

According to our high school coach, who had a PhD in nuclear physics. The main reason that the Pantex plant was re commissioned to assemble nuclear bombs was that nobody would miss Amarillo if it blew the hell up.

I know WT is not in Amarillo but it might as well be.

LOL might be some truth there. It's also soon to be home to the largest power plant in the U.S., 11 GW, as well as the world's largest AI storage campus. A $300 billion project, 5800 acres, 9 square miles. A joint venture with Texas Tech University.

Breaking: Advanced nuclear energy AI campus ‘HyperGrid’ coming to Amarillo : Amarillo Tribune

Texas Tech: "The Fermi America project will create one of the most significant power campuses in the U.S. and the largest advanced energy, private grid and intelligence development in the world."

A good time to own land and property in Amarillo. Things are going boom real soon.
