  • UMD Midseason Thoughts

Finally made it to an away game and look at the luck I brought the dogs..... Anyway, it was an interesting game to watch with neither side playing their best ball (in my opinion). Here are my midyear thoughts:
    • Defense
      • Hennessey and Klopp have played extremely well this year and hopefully Dati can get healthy for the second half as he is a difference maker. Strand is great on the run game but needs to cover better.
      • Have been doing a good job getting pressure but give up big rushing yards to scrambling QB's when they dont get the sack
      • Dline eating blocks for being a bit undersized
      • Struggle in the coverage game - when they do not bring pressure they get picked apart
      • Arm tackles - yards after contact are a major concern
    • Offense
      • WR play has been very poor all year. Nobody that can stretch the field vertically and drops continue to be an issue. They also struggle when the QB is scrambling. Noticed throughout the game on Saturday when the pocket broke down the WR's quit their routes and just kinda stood there. TE Pitz is their leading receiver in catches, yards, and TD's. Needs to be a major recruiting focus - need a portal guy
      • QB play. Walljasper is a great runner and passing was always the question mark. Circling back to my point above, I think part of that question mark is attributed to the lack of receivers to throw the ball to. I thought he actually had an above average game throwing the ball on Saturday they just need to get the WR room and QB room on the same page.
      • Wayne seemed to know each play before it was run. You could hear them yelling out what it was going to be from the sideline and they were right almost every time. I noticed this at the last home game as well. Either UMD is way to predictable based on formation or they are generous with their signals. Either way its an issue.
      • Oline - tough to seal the edge on outside run when the defense knows the play so Ill give a pass there. Considering injuries for the most part they are doing well although there wasnt much pass protection this past game.
      • Penalties - I think UMD had 6-7 on Saturday which doesn't sound too bad, however, I'd say 4 or 5 of those were on big, potential game changing plays.
      • Play calling is baffling at times. 4th and goal an inch out last week and they run QB outside out of shotgun when they hadnt been getting the edge blocked all game. 3rd and 3 at midfield and you run a 2 route misdirection play and get an incomplete with nobody open and end up punting.
    • Special Teams
      • Punter is excellent. Been impressed all year with hangtime and ability to gain field position
      • K has been better this year than last. Inside of 40 yards he is fairly reliable.
      • KR - Ames does a good job here when he hangs on to the ball. A few fumbles this year and still holds that ball out there instead of putting it high and tight at contact. Maybe he is more of a return specialist type than a WR.
    • Overall Thoughts
      • Sidelines always seem flat. Coach Wiese is a mild mannered type of guy but would love to see some fire there.
      • Never seen so many guys cramping up. Its an endless cycle of guys on the sideline laying getting stretched, coming off the filed limping with cramps, etc.. Maybe something with their strength and conditioning or players not hydrating up, but definitely an issue. Cost UMD a turnover on Saturday when Ames came up limp midway through his route which led to a pick.
      • UMD should be better than what they've been. No playoff wins since 2014? Second highest enrollment of football schools. Offer 89 majors and 76 minors for undergrads and 24 fields for masters programs. There are ~ 300,000 people in the Duluth area. Close enough to Wisconsin to load up on kids that didnt get D1 and dont want to play WI D3. Close enough to Minneapolis to get talent from that area. I would argue that Duluth has a recruiting advantage over many of the other NSIC schools. Understand Duluth is a hockey school, but should they be content being the best of the middle class of the conference?
      • Next year could be a tough one. Last year of eligibility for a bunch of guys and usual concerns about transfer portal.

Two weeks of what should be easier games for UMD before facing Bemidji at home in what I feel is a must win if Duluth has a chance to make the playoffs.

With the season almost over and UMD having little to no shot to make the playoffs it will be chalked up as a disappointing year for Duluth. They beat the teams they outmatched and got beat by teams that were well coached and ready to play. This has been a consistent theme over the last ten years I've been following the Wiese lead Bulldogs and I look for UMD to take a 2021 Mankato like step back next year as key players depart the program without having recruited well to fill those roles (like UMD is seeing with their WR's this year - leading WR a D3 transfer out of Platteville with 23 catches and 340 yards). I know it wont happen but would love to see some changes made so I dont have to watch a hook and ladder on a key third down run at the line of scrimmage against press coverage. Or a punt with 3 mins to go in the game down 7 at midfield just to never get the ball back again. I know most folks on the board arent big UMD football followers but if you ever want to see questionable coaching decisions watch any UMD game against a quality opponent. Its play not to lose football and we all know what that gets you (vs Sioux Falls in 2022 another great example).

Some questions and comments for UMD.

1: Are coaches committed to Walljasper as a QB as his throwing game seems to be a liability or is it his receivers?

2: Is there a freshmen QB ready to start next season and hand the ball off to Walljasper.?

3: Walljasper must be on tough hombre take all that punishment and not to slow down late in season.

4: 10 years ago Bulldogs would have been ranked from their 2 NC reputation .

5: I follow recruiting and UMD recruits very well. Are their some young players in the pipeline to help defense and WR.

6: Beat the Mavs in Mankato and who knows what could shake out after week 11.

7: Seems weird that you're the only voice of the Dog on this forum. When at Augie games I try to inform fans of website. We should print up business cards to hand out to increase traffic on this site. ( Are you listening Matt, Brandon.)

I don't see any changes being made at QB....I think he's their meal ticket, MVP, you name it. Bolstering things around him would be the focus.

The Bulldogs still have a good shot at the playoffs with a 9-2 record, that would include a win over Mankato, earlier it was said if the Dogs beat either Wayne, Bemidji or Mankato and finish 9-2 they would be in. A Mankato win is a big if, but possible. Why would you want a coaching change? Coach Wiese is 94-22 and NSIC record of 88-16, most teams would love that, you are right a change isn’t going to happen. My suggestion is if you don’t want to watch a hook and ladder or punt (coach admitted that was a mistake) then don’t watch. You must not follow their recruiting very well, other wise you would know they recruited 6 WRs in 2023, 2 all state from WI and 2 all state from MN, Schamm, Patterson, Flaherty, Mitchell, Gilbert III and McCoy, all have great potential, if they stay at UMD. Walljasper is a stud and will only get better ,on track for a 1000 yd rushing and passing season, very stellar season. Remember when UMD was in the NCC they were up to a high of 30 scholarships, 36 max in D2, the NSIC was at 24 then up to a 28 cap, now the NSIC is at 36. UMD has been operating with 20-24 scholarships since 2013, the new AD has committed to 30 next season. If Coach Wiese and his staff has been this successful with 24, I see quite an improvement in debt with 30. We will lose 2 of the best safeties to wear a Bulldog uniform, along with key players on both O and D, but the roster is far from bare, we have had high level recruiting the last 5 yrs.

Bulldogs only make the playoffs with a win @ Mankato and some help. They have one of the weakest (if not the weakest) schedules in D2 which is why you don't see them regionally ranked at 7-2. You're right its easy to second guess play calls when you're not the guy on the sideline, however, there has been too many head scratchers (and isn't that part of watching and getting into football in the first place). No playoff wins in 10 years and without digging I'd bet a 6 pack that UMD has a losing record against teams with a winning record over that same period.

            WR's you mention:
Schramm (5'11) - zero yards receiving, played QB in HS
            Patterson (5'10") - 4 catches for 58 yards
            Flaherty (6'2") - 2 catches for 21 yards
Mitchell (5'10") - no stats on year, played RB in WI
            Gilbert III (6'3") - 2 catches for 21
            McCoy (6'0") - 1 catch for 15 yards

Short group of receivers that are still learning the position. It was probably the biggest hole that needed to be filled coming into the season (last season too candidly) and it's tough to argue that it was not. Maybe in 2-3 years one or two of the guys in this group grow into something but it's been a struggle this year. With the new rules allowing RS to play some during the regular season if these were quick impact guys you would have seen them out there more given the true lack of depth.

To VikingFaithful's post above. I'm shocked that Walljasper has made it through the grind this year and we havent seen Eggert (RS/Fr) take on a larger role. Eggert has looked good throwing the ball when coming in on mop up duty.

Other thing I've wondered is will Walljasper hit the portal after this season? Losing some big dogs on the Oline like potential NFL guy Treyvon Cahalan - guy is a stud, believe all starting DB's are gone after this season as well, two stud safeties (Pokornowski and Glodowski). Having gone through a meat grinder this season, it could happen, and if it did, wonder what type of opportunities he would get.

Plus Umdfan35 if I stopped watching the games nobody would comment on UMD football here :-)

Appreciate having both of you guys on here to speak about the Bulldogs.

They need to beat Mankato..hope that Wayne loses (to keep them out of the conversation)..and they want Augie to lose out also. Their SOS is super low..that's the issue.

Coaches have to recruit yr round now , not only HS players but recruiting their own players to keep them out of the portal, in reference to Kyle Walljasper, anything is possible, but I have 1st hand knowledge he loves Duluth, the area, team and staff, I doubt he will test the waters. Mitchell was An All State RB from WI, but will develop into an outstanding receiver, he does have 4 receptions for 34 yards, if you watch the highlites Patterson had some outstanding catches. Speaking of the portal we lost Dbor who was outstanding at CB had 7 INTs, last season, he is having a stellar yr at Duquesne U. But we got the twins from Mary. I will have to post more to pick up some of the slack

For the record UMD’s last playoff wins were in 2014 v NWMS and Quachite Baptist. For being a Bulldogfan, you sure like to point out negative aspects of this proud and highly successful program, as far as SOS, we can only play the teams that the NSIC schedules, except this yr when we added NMU.

Curt Wiese has done a really good job of keeping winning tradition alive at UMD. I don't see any world where they get rid of him. Their 2 losses are against good teams with 1 being an 8 hour bus ride. It's really hard winning on the road! Especially in this league with the bus trips that teams make! I think in years past they have definitely benefitted from the 2 division setup in the league and not having to play all the south teams, which traditionally has been a much deeper and tougher division to win. It's unfortunate that they've played 3 teams on their schedule that have a combined 2 wins which is killing their SOS. Beat Mankato and grab a quality win, and Duluth is still a nationally known brand so anything could happen for postseason.

Relative of Walljasper or player on the team? First hand would be direct from Walljasper so I hope he is saying he wants to stay because he has been alot of fun to watch play this year.

You are correct, it was 2014 so it will only be a 9 year drought. Not purely negative on my posts, just a bit frustrated the last few seasons that's all. I've had plenty of posts talking up the Dogs and their players. This year their SoS should have made it a cakewalk to the playoffs. Beat Wayne and then go 1-1 with BSU and Mankato and youre in. Could probably have even gone 0-2 against those two and been in. If they end up 8-3 this year with that schedule it will say it was an average+ season.

FWIW, I enjoy having a UMD fan perspective on the board. It always seemed odd to me that with a program that successful and a decent sized alumni base that a few more people haven't found their way to D2Football.com. I'm hesitant to say that I welcome your presence on the basketball side of things because I don't know how much positivity I could handle in regards to Wieck and his whiners. But I understand winter is for hockey in Duluth.

And two different perspectives at that! Even better 👍🏻

looking at the schedule preseason, one never knows the SOS. Northern State, Winona, SMSU and USF can always be tough, NMU was an unknown, as it turned out, they are weak. I wouldn’t call it a cakewalk as playing games and winning is always tough, buy being undefeated and losing to WSC, was very disappointing ,because the Bulldogs had chances, a team doesn’t win much giving up 70 yard TD runs v Wayne and BSU, and not scoring a TD on 4th down and less than a yard. I agree not getting in the playoffs and 8-3 will be disappointing, I am sure the team and staff feel that way too. Winning out is important, hope we play well on Sat. Then off to Mankato, really appreciate your passion for the UMD football team, I encourage you to donate to help increase our scholarship level, if you haven’t already.
