Usually mid October- teachers get two days off for the state conference in the Twin Cities. So HS football us usually held on Wednesday night. Back in the pre- football tournament days when I was in HS, it would be the 8th game in a 9 game season. Now Minnesota plays 8 game schedules and everyone- or almost everyone- is eligible for the playoffs, which start the next Tuesday.

Usually this was the time that we picked corn. So if I was in HS, college or teaching, I was back on the farm. This is why it is a popular thing in rural areas. Attendance at the conference was not mandatory.
oh dang.....not even close to what I was thinking....thanks for that insight. interesting for sure. What state conference? for teachers?

Yes, the statewide teacher convention. The organizations merged and changed their name a number of years ago.

That would be fun. Probably a little out of my range though.

Interesting. Winona State still has it listed on Sept 26th 6 PM on their schedule. Can't imagine any event on campus or in town that would dictate a move.

Reminds me of a story a local baseball coach told me. He took his team to another school. A bus from a third school pulled up about the same time. Both coaches had the home team on the schedule for the same day. The two visiting schools ended up playing each other and the home team............ went home. Kind of embarrassing for the home school AD.

Another one- basketball game at home. Officials didn't show up. Started the B game with two local former players who were in college. Both did such a good job the visiting teams fans were very complimentary. The officials had forgotten about it until they got a phone call, then got there for the varsity game. Home team won in a blowout but the visiting fans threw a fit. Wanted to call the state high school league. The next week the same officials were AT that team's home. Home team won, fans told them what a great job they had done and wished they had had them on the road. They didn't figure out that it had been the same officials. You can't even make this stuff up.

One more. I was the head football coach, last game of the regular season on the road. Game was moved to a Thursday night so that the home volleyball team could play a home game on Friday night. No one told the officials. The options were A. wait until the officials got done with another game 20 miles away. Our superintendent nixed that right away, saying we aren't starting at game at 10 PM on a school night. B. Use their assistant and my assistant as officials. I nixed that! C. Postpone the game until Friday afternoon. We did this and it felt like a junior high game. Both teams were pretty flat but we won easily.

I think that Augie and Winona will figure it out.

When collecting D2 sport schedules for my website before each season, I routinely have to deal with conflicting information... a lot of the time I just have to make my best guess on who's correct and remind myself that it'll get sorted out eventually.

Unless the conference struck a deal with ESPN playing on a Friday especially at 6 makes no sense to me. We'll find out soon enough I'm sure.
