I know I'm jumping the gun here, but I'm going to ask a serious question. Let's say McCollum wins this National Championship (his third in the past four years that have actually had tournaments played). And let's reflect on this info piece, pulled from the NWMSU website and updated with what would include this season's numbers if they win it all this year:
Over the past five seasons, McCollum has guided Northwest to a mark of 159-8 and three NCAA Division II national championships (2017, 2019, 2021).
I get it, Bearcat fans will all say, "Maybe he doesn't want to leave Maryville, his family is happy here, he loves this school and program, etc." I get all of that. But let's be real: deep down in their hearts, I'm willing to bet almost every coach wants to work his way to whatever the next level is. It's what competitors do. It's what all (or at least most) of us want to do at our own jobs.
I also know Bearcat fans will say, "He just hasn't gotten a D1 opportunity that appeals to him so why take a crappy job?, etc." and I get that too. You don't want to just take some low-level, nobody-is-gonna-win-here type of job and struggle for 3-5 years and then get fired and have to go looking for a worsesomeLast edited by MrAugustana; 03-25-2021, 08:42 PM.

I know all the speculation has to be tough on him and his family (as Saul addressed this week), but a coach this good deserves a shot at the highest level.
Plus, despite the fact that #culturewins, who knows if those other guys (Hudgins, Bernard, etc.) are for sure coming back next year? I know Hawkins said he is, and I won't be surprised if the others do too, but there's no way it can't at least be on their minds that they could be the starting point guard at a solid mid- or even high-major D1 for a year or two.
Also, I could see him getting a high-level job in a non-P5 conference, but I would be pretty surprised if any legitimate P5 high-majors gave a D2 guy a shot. As most people have said, Kim Anderson was a unique case as a beloved former player at Missouri coming off of a National Championship win, but I would imagine his failure at Missouri, despite the odds being so stacked against him in the first place, probably give most P5 athletic directors pause at the idea of trying another D2-to-P5 experiment. But who knows? Reality got weird in 2020 and fewer and fewer things seem to make sense anymore these days.

Kind of interesting to look at the similarities between this year's D2 Final Four and the 2016 Final Four.
In the 2016 Final Four, 1-seed Lincoln Memorial won a super tight game (103-102) against West Liberty while Augie blew out Western Oregon, 74-55. Then the 2-seed Vikings went on to beat the 1-seed Railsplitters in the National Championship.
This year in the Final Four you've got 1-seed West Texas A&M winning a super tight game (87-86) against Lincoln Memorial while NWMSU is blowing out Flagler by 25+, leading to a another 1-seed vs. 2-seed matchup for the National Championship. Should be fun to see if this year's outcome matches the 2016 outcome or not.
