Maybe for the rebuild, you need a guy that loves Northern, has a past, gets the fan bases and donors active again, it's a lot easier to recruit to a place you love or appreciate.
worst case, doesn't work out, or we win and he moves on. Beat case, he is solid for the last 25 years of his coaching career and we go through six coaches in 100 years.Last edited by NSU4LIFE; 03-19-2025, 07:07 PM.

Hammer would satisfy the crowd that is looking for an NSU guy, but his record isn't the best. Like him personally, but it sounds like the Upper Iowa coach might be the guy. Compared to the rest of the pool that I heard about he is a bigger name.

Matt Hammer would be a popular hire due to his Northern ties and playing for Meyer. A few others that eould be interested in that same pedigree is Tom Parks who is an alum and currently a head coach at junior college. He has done pretty well recruiting some good players with a current player of his going to Auburn. Another one I could think of is Houston Reed as he is another former Northern player who has D2 head coaching experience and currently an assistant for Steve Smiley at Northern Colorado. Not sure if either of those guys applied, are interested or if Northern has interest in them but both could be a good fit. Another one who doesn’t have direct ties to Northern is Matt Wilber who was the head coach at DWU and then left to coach for the Phoenix Mercury. I don’t know of these 3 applied for the job or who is in the running but looking forward to Northern Basketball getting back to how it was just a few years ago.

It would appear the coaching search has taken a few different twists and turns. I honestly thought McKowen was the guy, but obviously he chose MoWest. Other rumors I had heard involved assistant coaches from Summit League teams, but not this one. I don't honestly know much about him, but he does appear to have had some success in the past. Hopefully a decision is made soon so the new coach can build a roster for next season.
