Living in Mandan, I saw a lot of his games at Mary that year. I’d be fine with this hire.

    • I just went back to look it up. He was there 2 seasons. In the three seasons before he got there, they never reached 10 wins in a season. In Year 1, he went 15-13. Then in Year 2, they went 23-6 and was the No. 4 seed in Central Region.

Can’t forget they also had Bismarck High School’s HC Jordan Wilhelm.

Hopefully a decision is made soon so the new coach can build a roster for next season.

As always, you hope for the best, but hiring a guy that was last a head coach 16 years ago and had one good year isn't really inspiring to me. I'm not really against anyone but we need some energy life and reconnecting done with this program.

Herbst has had success as a head coach, taking Mary to the Regional is impressive when you look at what they have done otherwise. He has been a top assistant for a lot of years in the Summit League. He would appear to be very familiar with the region. He has been working under Sather for 3 years, so I’m sure they’ve spoken about NSU and Herbst should have a pretty good idea of what he getting in to. It is not flashy, but that isn’t what Northern needs. I think this could be a good hire, if Herbst is the guy.

            • Sometimes, a program needs a short-term coach to help get a program back on solid footing, and then hand it off to someone who can bring it the rest of the way. NSU4LIFE's point is absolutely valid, and normally I would agree with you that he doesn't really fit the profile of a coach who would excite the NSU fan base, but it probably speaks to how badly Saul ran things into the ground there.

              • Should we be concerned with the lack of press releases regarding this new coaching hire? Or even the fact they haven’t announced anybody yet? I don’t want to discredit this administration but without a coach in place during the open transfer portal you’re sort of missing out when you need to rebuild a whole program.

Sounds like they had picked the guy they wanted, but that guy picked somewhere else. The search has shifted and I would expect an announcement soon.
