    Re: Valdosta State vs Ferris State

    If Ferris wins, they'll be only the second college football team all-time to go 16-0 in one season. Yale in 1894 went 16-0, but half of their games were against "athletic clubs" and not actual schools.

      Wow! So, since many feel FSU would have been the top seed in their region otherwise, the penalty by the NCAA might have actually given them a shot at history.

      The Bulldogs have been on the cusp of this game for several seasons now. They deserve to be there and I'm excited for their fanbase!

        To me, the best "atmosphere" games (in person and on TV for those there and watching at home) the D2 title game has had in the past 30 years have been home games (basically). The three titles in Florence for UNA and the one NWMSU title in KC that wasn't weather hampered. You can also toss in the games in Florence when Jax State only had a couple hours to drive for their two non-weather affected title game appearances (won in '92).

        There's something to be said for one team's fans being able to show up en masse and make the atmosphere electric.

        I understand the in-week goodies like visits to elementary schools and VA hospitals along with pep rallies and police escorts - but those could be kept by a special committee.

        Just a thought.

        On the flip side, VERY happy D2 found McKinney this year on such short notice. I was pulling for an LSC school to be in the mix (Tarleton or Commerce would have given this that atmosphere I described earlier) but certainly happy that a GSC team is there!

        No Championship game should be played at either teams venue. Have to make it special, I even think the semi final games should be played at the same venue a couple hours apart.

          So, to you, what makes it "special" other than everything I listed in my post?

          The only thing really different for the teams would be travel for the home team. And, when UNA was the title game in Florence, the NCAA made them stay in the team hotels/practice at high schools/etc. as pre-planned before they advanced to those title games.

            LOL, Yea, looking back, maybe the whole coin toss idea was a major stretch. However I still believe having the top seeded team's town hosting a National Championship game would be not only rewarding but also a huge (season long) incentive for the team. Playing in front of a pretty much guaranteed packed house (in most cases) would be electrifying for both teams and fans. From a former player's point of view, trying your hardest on the field, and looking up at a bunch of empty stands can be somewhat disheartening (no matter where you're playing).

            Now, no doubt about it, traveling for a National Championship game is 'special' for some, here's some numbers to consider if you make the trip (based on a single person):

            ****
            Family members, fans, and student's round trip (1,861 miles) expenses from Valdosta GA (for those unable to book a flight).

            Gas, based on 20 mpg @ $2.30 per gallon = $214.00

            Food, drink, and lodging based on 2 night trip (28 hour round trip drive) = $306.00 (being fairly conservative)

            Ticket price = $25.00

            Total = $545.00
            .................................................. .................................................. ....

            ****
            Family members, fans, and student's round trip (2,196 miles) expenses from Big Rapids MI (for those unable to book a flight).

            Gas, based on 20 mpg @ $2.30 per gallon = $252.00

            Food, drink, and lodging based on 2 night trip (33 hour round trip drive) = $306.00 (being fairly conservative)

            Ticket price = $25.00

            Total = $583.00

            But then again, coming home with the title = Priceless!

                  Of the teams that have made it to the title game in the past, who wouldn't have a stadium up to snuff? While UWF's Community Maritime Park doesn't meet the current specs by the NCAA for the title game (3K on the "visitors" side) those could be tweaked if they policy were to be changed.

                  All GSC stadiums are on ESPN each season now.

                    Those aren't actual ESPN broadcasts. They are just the schools using the ESPN platform to broadcast as opposed to Presto, or Sidearm, or YouTube. They pay to put those games on WatchESPN. Most of them are produced by the schools and the feed is just patched through to the link on WatchESPN for people to watch. They aren't subject to the same standards as the actual ESPN crew and truck showing up and setting up shop to produce the game and put it on the actual ESPN TV channels. Any school can broadcast games on WatchESPN if they pay ESPN to house their games, even if they're filmed on cell phones, haha.

                      You're incorrect. The GSC has a Game of the Week with our own set of commentators that travels around to one (sometimes two) games each week with with full production. It's sponsored by the Florida Space Coast tourism group.

                        Yes, but those aren't ESPN employees showing up to broadcast, they aren't ESPN announcers, they aren't ESPN cameras. It is production done by an outside group, with the link to watch just put on the ESPN website. When it is broadcast on actual ESPN channels, then ESPN does all that.

                          Haha. Bless your heart.

                          ESPN contracts out that work. Ask Purple Swarm - he works lots of games for them in AL/TN, etc.

                            The point is not the teams which happen to have made it this year.

                            The point is that, if you set a policy, it must be applicable to all schools in all years.

                              But, you can also be realistic and realize that about 10 or so current D2 schools have made it to the title game.

                                In the last several years both Shepherd and CSU-Pueblo have been in the NC game. Neither could provide 3000 seats to visitors easily.

                                Just pointing out that you have major differences in the stadiums, lighting etc.
