  • Score Page on the D2 website

Seems this page is not refreshing scores, was this something a human being did in the past, or was ran by a program and is malfunctioning?

It was done by humans. The D2 team mentioned in one of their videos that they will not be doing the score updates anymore. If I remember right, it is due to manning and the cost that some of the conferences and teams charge to stream.

With Brandon dealing with his ongoing medical issues it was announced that the scores won't be updated as it took people manually watching each game and updating scores.

Thanks for the info. I wonder if someone could be paid to write a script to scrub the info from the schools webpage?

Wow, that is a big surprise to me that it was done by hand. I'm not a website expert but I assumed it was done through API pulls.

Yeah, I miss the D2.com Score Board as well, I wonder if someone could be paid to at least post scores involving Top 25 teams each week.

Hi all. We hope we can go back to doing real-time score updates soon. To put it as briefly and simply as a I can, it just wasn't something we were able to prioritize. Believe me, I miss it too. Having a single source to go to was very valuable and it also drove a lot of clicks to the website. I used it a lot myself while away from home at games. As I am sure you can imagine, it's been incredibly difficult to keep everything afloat since Brandon's health emergency. He did a lot of the score updates himself. There were many Saturdays where B manned that scoreboard from noon to midnight. That's not something I am willing to do as I spend my Saturdays at games. Same for most of our team, which is all volunteers. Brandon did have some people on call that assisted with scores but for reasons I won't go into, that is not an option for us this year. I wish we had API kits that would allow us to ping the conference scoreboards and update scores but we don't. I would really like to do that as I work in the software industry but its a big project with a lot of obstacles to work around. I hope that is a solution for the future but, again, big project for a small outfit of volunteer staff. All that said, we are pursuing an option that would cover the scoreboard. No promises, but we're hopeful we can get that done soon.

I've been a web dev for a couple dozen years, so I can guess a little. It's a matter of money most likely. Most teams were using Sidearm, but it looks like they might not be doing football anymore. You could scrape NCAA directly, but that would probably get you sued. There are places like https://collegefootballdata.com and https://api-sports.io that have data of various qualities, but that would require at least some coding. If they don't really have any coders on staff, it would be a bit much to ask. Ans honestly, it would be cheaper to just link directly to https://www.ncaa.com/scoreboard/football/d2

Chuck had said that quite often it ended up being Brandon doing a lot of that work too.

Man, it really is an insane amount of dedication that goes into this place. Sincere thanks to everyone who keep us going (and especially Brandon!)

There is this website for the NSIC, though I don't know who maintains it. I keep it pulled up on my phone on gameday so I can see what's going on. Not the entire division, but something:

                    NSIC Football Scoreboard (nsicscores.com)

The NCAA's site will do it in real time if teams are scoring using NLS.

The thing I liked best about the scoreboard was that if there was a close game, you could often go right to live stats, video link, or find a radio link through the team website. The ncaa site doesn't give you all of those value adders.

Like Chuck mentioned, it’s a manual process that Brandon has put his own time and efforts into each Saturday, end to end. Live stats from one game to the next and not getting a chance to soak in the action much at all..just feverishly going from one site to another.

With Brandon being the only actual full-time employee for the operation, this is kinda risk of a one man show. Chuck, myself, and a few others are buddies who have volunteered time and certainly this off-season and now..we are kinda putting in full time hours to keep his vision going.

Let’s just say the site isn’t some big money maker for Brandon and with all of his medical challenges and the costs of his care going forward, there isn’t side cash to throw a bunch of $$ at technology for just the scoreboard area. Brandon had looked extensively at new tech ideas in the recent past, but nothing out there was going to work for certain, yet be timely with scores.

Obviously having Brandon pay someone the time he put in each Saturday is a financial situation he doesn’t need to deal with given his current medical challenges..and we certainly aren’t expecting website volunteer staffers to pay for that either.

Covering D2 is our number one focus..news, our Top 25, national and conference shows/columns..that’s been where our time and efforts have been spent. That said, we are still kicking around options..since 10-12 hour scoreboard upkeep is a huge volunteer ask for the next 11-15 straight Saturdays.

Board brothers here..thanks again for helping drive traffic to the site and to our programming.

Yeah. We understand, and we definitely appreciate your time and effort.

I'm definitely not volunteering to do scores. I like being married too much for that.

Agreed; to be clear I am not criticizing the fact that it does not update automatically. Just amazed at the amount of work that was being done behind the scenes.
