As they say, don't want to "learn" too much about what a team is after one game. But at the risk of being proven wrong, here is my take on what we might have "learned" about the Toppers Saturday.

The ultimate question is is WU a typical bad first year program or are they one of those rare new teams that is good right out of the gate? Won't know that for at least a few more weeks. Assuming they are a typical bad first year team, here are some observations:

          1. WLU has a lot of work to do particularly on defense.
          2. The "senior heavy" defensive backfield looked as porous as former WLU teams who started freshmen and sophmores. MAYBE it's the defensive scheme and not the players?
          3. Penalties, penalties, penalties. WLU doesn't commit a lot of penalties, but they ALWAYS seem to be ball busters.
          4. Phillips is a streaky QB. When he's on he's productive...but when he's not, it is painful to watch.
          5. We have a pretty good RB in Wimbush and a couple of capable backups in Frisby and Farmer.
          6. TE Coles is pretty good.
          7. DL was solid against the run but got little pressure in the passing game.
          8. WLU is 3-7 in their last 10 season openers. This staff does not seem to know how to get a team ready to open a season.
          9. In it's seven opening day losses, WLU has come back to win the following week five times.
          10. To close on a positive note, WLU's 33 point offensive "explosion" Saturday is the first time they have eclipsed 30 points on opening day since...wait for it...their 2009 playoff season when they actually lost to Edinboro 42-30.

A lot of the sour taste about Saturdays W is the fact that it happened against a first year program, that program was our cross town arch rivals and a lot of the failure points were in areas where we were supposed to be strong. One game, win or lose, doesn't a season make and many teams have rebounded from ****ty opening game performances to achieve great things, but I am fearful that WLU's performance Saturday is more a sign post on the future of the season as opposed to a one off bad game.

But hay, we won! A 33-30 W looks exactly the same as a 65-0 W. Right now we are sitting atop the MEC standings and there are probably five teams that would like to be in our spot!! So, enjoy!!

Didn't notice but that doubles the task for WLU. It may not be pretty.

Thursdays "Clash Between The Undefeated" will be a WAR!!!! The highflying WLU offense is averaging over 30 points and 500 yards per game this year. Lead by Senior stand out QB Zach Phillips who is averaging over 330 passing yards and a league leading 3 TD passes per game, WLU's high powered offense will be a stern test for a Notre Dame defense that is giving up over 13 yards per catch on the season. A rock solid WLU defense is giving up fewer than 30 rushing yards per game on the season. Lead by Senior defensive back Josh Ojo who is averaging 8 tackles per game and Senior defensive lineman Cody Rine who is averaging 2 tackles for loss, the senior heavy WLU defense will have their hands full stopping the Notre Dame offense.

This clash between the TITANS of the MEC occurs this Thursday at West Family Stadium on the beautiful campus of West Liberty University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM but get there early to insure you get a seat to be part of Topper Nation as they cheer West Liberty and their "Air Raid" offense on to victory. If you can't drive...go with a friend...if they can't drive, take a bus...if there is no bus WALK...if you have broken legs, RIP THE CAST OFF OR WALK ON YOUR HANDS but somehow find a way to BE THERE for the "CLASH BETWEEN THE UNDEFEATED!!!!"

                  THIS TIME IT'S WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty good start for the Toppers. Take the opening KO and drive down for a FG to grab an early 3-0 lead over NDC.

This brought flashbacks of Jackie Moon promoting the Flint Michigan Mega Bowl.

WLU offense is non existant and McGloughlin is as advertised. WLU 10 NDC 22 about 6 to play in the half.

WLU 10 NDC 22 at the half in a game that is not as close as the score says.
