Just for the sake of discussion......so a new OC comes in at the beginning of the year and during the spring he has a chance to see what he's got. So, knowing that at least until the next year he doesn' t have the type of players he needs to run his offense, shouldn't he at least try to adjust plays or come up with some new plays that his current players can execute?

    Just wondering......

He'll play to the strengths he has.

I just don't think he has the personnel yet to compete with traditionally stronger programs. But given the chance he probably will.

Remember, he had his talent in his second year here, but the first half of his second season was a train wreck. Once the players got it they had a good second half of the year (they were 1-3 after the first 4 games and then won 4 of the next 5 to finish the season - and scored a lot of points in the wins).

That momentum was the foundation that they built the championship on in 2018. But he had to recruit his type of guys to get it done.

Two things that tremendously helped his recruiting. One, VSU wins championships. Great athletes want to win championships too. Second, everyone in Florida over 40 years old knows who Kerwin Bell is. He has their ear.

He doesn't have that item one at South Florida, but the second item still applies. And he can tell his recruits that his team at VSU led the nation in scoring and that he led them to a NC. He can get their attention.

He did bring a national championship and left behind the pieces to win two (possibly three) more. The core of VSU's championship team was sophomores and freshmen, and Durham is certainly good enough to lead the team to a championship provided the current staff is able to surround him with talent his senior year.

With Dean, it seemed as both he and the program were stagnating and both needed a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, Dean just didn't jump to the right spot at Georgia Southern. Looking at his time at VSU, there were a few 6-4 years sprinkled among his championships. I always had the impression that Dean was the same year in and year out and that in some years, the players decided whether they were going to make a run at the championship or not.

Even if this season turns into a complete disaster, UWG would be wise to look at Dean's career and not make a hasty decision lest they want to wander aimlessly in the Ledford Forrest for years again.

Bell chased a paycheck, but he also chased an opportunity. Win, and the door was open for him for an FBS head coaching job or an OC job at a "Power Five" program. Another national championship season(s) at VSU probably would have lead to an FCS coaching job before a shot at FBS. It doesn't appear the gamble is paying off.
That's my point you're spot on

          VERY good point.
It can be validated just by observing two former GSC HC's.

Will Hall- He has a system and instills it wherever he goes. From LLafayette, to Memphis, now Tulane, he uses the personnel he inherited as he establishes his scheme.

Kerwin Bell- doesn't appear to have been afforded that flexibility, but hopefully he'll have the chance to bring it to fruition.

This is a valid point, however, recruiting will be difficult if the players are unsure whether their OC will be there next year!
