This is a D1 campus in a larger city in SEC country next to Pensacola Beach. The standard should be to be the elite of the elite at the D2 level. I've been to many D1 campuses and locations that offer a lot less.

Not sure which D1 schools you’re referring to…

Yes, UWF is in a great location, but there’s a lot more that goes into building a championship program than simply being near the beach. Look at Ferris State or Harding—neither has a beach or a prime location, yet both consistently compete at the highest level.

    The reality is:
    • UWF has below-average D2 facilities.
    • The school has higher academic standards than many other D2 programs.
    • Scholarships are capped the same as everyone else.
On top of that, the top D2 programs are constantly being picked apart by D1 schools. Last year’s UWF defense, ranked top 5 nationally, lost 8+ starters to D1 FBS programs. The offense managed to keep most of its young, talented core together for another season.

So, there’s no reason to panic or overreact to a sloppy 21-point win over a “weak” opponent. It was an ugly game, sure, but UWF is still a very good football team that will continue competing at a high level.

As much as it bothers you, weather the helmet says UWF, Argos, or “SEC Country Pensacola Beach,” this program will contend.

How a football team plays in any particular game is like any other athletic endeavor- it varies depending on a whole host of factors. It is very similar to what happens when I tee up my golf ball on the first tee- I have a hopeful idea of how I will score based on recent rounds, but you never know if it will be an effortless in the zone day or a struggle to get the ball in play and in the cup.

Like a golf swing a football team has a lot of moving parts that have to work together for a team to get into the zone of optimal performance and it doesn’t always happen every game. Like a golf swing, a team can have glitches on any particular day and you hope you can work around the glitch and still have some success.

Anyone that has played any sport knows you don’t perform in the zone of optimal performance every time you play. The Argos were in the zone against L-R, but had some glitches against Kentucky Wesleyan. The bottom line is that they worked around the glitches and still won by 3 TDs. The Argos, like every championship team, had bad games in their championship season and still hoisted the trophy in McKinney. Would I like to see my team perform in the zone every game and win by 30+? Of course I would, but that is unlikely and unrealistic and it is probably better that the team has some adversity in order to reach its full potential.

When I was a UWF student in the early 1980’s the school had just restarted its athletic program after shutting it down in the 1970’s. We were told we couldn’t have a football team for decades despite having success in other sports. We are now approaching 10 years of football with a winning season every year but the first, multiple conference titles and playoff runs, two trips to the national championship with one title and a brand new state of the art stadium to be built by 2027 with a likely move to FCS and the possibility of playing FSU or Florida in my lifetime. I’m enjoying every step of this journey and an occasional glitchy game with a few more penalties that we win by 21 is not going to ruin my day or my hopes for the season.

      Gooo Arrrgggooosss!!!

Except for INT are you sure he wasn't talking about VSU?

If I take that hat off, it should be unfair when these other schools have to recruit against West Florida. Completely unfair.
And yet, I choose to live in Cleveland. It’s a special place.
