Thought this would be a quiet offseason, but Coach Wheatley had other ideas. OC Russell DeMasi and DC Tom Sims are out.

I feel for him, as it's tough to recruit in the state of Michigan. Four other schools have better-performing programs as of late, and all but one have better facilities, too. He seems like a guy, though, based on the interviews that I saw of him, who can make something happen. I wish him the best, as it helps when you see other GLIAC schools perform well outside of conference play.

Take it from a former WSU athlete, I actually WANTED to live in Detroit having grown up a big Detroit sports fan. Being located in a major city has some awesome advantages, not just for the students/athletes to take part in, but it is also a positive when it comes to the post-grad opportunities. You can acquire experience without going far with some many big companies looking for interns, entry-level jobs, etc.
In my humble opinion, WSU football has faltered with poor coaching hires as of late as well as poor recruiting strategies. The top WSU football teams of the past had a roster construction compiling players from top OAA/MAC/Catholic League teams. Sprinkled in with Ohio (Akron, Toledo) area athletes, a few PSL kids (but not many), and some top athletes from the west side or thumb area. Why Wayne has gotten away from recruiting kids from top HS programs I do not know. Those athletes bring with them a standard of excellence and winning to build a championship culture.

Before they even got to the on the field stuff, my concern was that we were bringing in coaches that didn't have a whole lot of Midwestern, let alone Michigan, ties to get the in with some of the coaches. I'm not going to claim I have a bead on the situation, but my gut says that the new coordinators are gonna be from around here to fix that issue. As far as getting recruits to come here, yeah the best we have to sell is hope and the opportunities you can get here in Detroit.
I do like that Wheatley has been able to throw his name around to get some JuCo transfers to come in, something that Wayne really hadn't done before. Now it's a matter of getting them on the field.

Wheatley should also be relieved of his duties. He took a losing program and made it worse. I don't foresee much improvement if any next year. Time will tell but I'm not optimistic. Can't cry over spilled milk but Wayne State dropped the ball by not forcing Winters out and hiring Scott Wooster as HC before he left for Grand Valley.

Not coaching, but there's been some very big transfer portal announcements for GV.
DE Niles King, OL Jeff Burton, OL Jaylin Caldwell, CB Devin Pringle, CB Terez Reid have all announced they are in the transfer portal.
King has announced he has received offers from Arizona, Oklahoma State, and Boise State thus far.
Burton has announced he has received offers from Tennessee Tech, Kent State, Murray State, Bryant, Maine, Gardner Webb, and Campbell. So only one FBS offer for him so far.
Pringle has announced he has received offers from Colorado State, Jacksonville State, UMass, Liberty, Kent State, Buffalo, New Mexico State, Ball State, Missouri State, and UTEP.
Reid has announced he has received offers from UTEP and Kent State.
Caldwell has announced he has received an offer from UTEP.
I'm sure there's more, but those are the ones I've seen on Twitter so far. Those would all be huge losses.2021 D2Football Fantasy Champion
