Erika hired that coach and also knew what was going on.

Might not be a bad idea. Does Tony Annese have a daughter?

Fournier had his faults but Wayne State Athletics made progress under his watch. I'm not sure why he was fired so I don't want to give him too much praise but facilities improved as well as the athletic programs in general. Even the football program got better, for a few years anyway. I'm not seeing much progress under Ms Wallace. She did add a women's soccer team but on the other hand the Football program is at its lowest level in at least 30 years.

Wasn't he embezzling money? He was let go for "undisclosed reasons".

That was the rumor but I've never seen that confirmed.

The WSU student paper was able to obtain some information; really they were the only ones to actually investigate why he was let go. Basically, it seems like Fournier had lost his touch when it came to the day to day of running the department. What's not mentioned were his major blunders regarding the abrupt retirement of the men's basketball team coach 1 or 2 games into the season and allowing Winters to stick around too long (but those are the reasons I wanted him out). https://www.thesouthend.wayne.edu/ar...4eb927fd6.html

Anytime someone says someone is a DEI hire I think that person definitely earned their position.

I wasn't aware of the head basketball coach issue but I definitely lost faith in Fournier when he kept Winters around way longer than he should have.

Yeah it was the first year in the new basketball arena. He coached the Michigan game and a game at Ashland, then poof, he announced his retirement. Really peculiar coming off of a GLIAC regular season title and an NCAA tournament appearance. The grapevine said he had lost the locker room. I also don’t think he was under contract (he had one previously).

IDK but if I’m the AD I make sure my coach isn’t contemplating leaving the program.

If I was a WSU donor I would be in the ADs office today...or the presidents office. What a waste. WSU could be a top 10 team in a year or two with the right staff. Unreal....

how can they go for free?

I'm assuming the poster is referring to athletic scholarships?

No, WSU covers tuition for all Detroit students. There may also be other tuition payment grants in the area too.

So basically they could field a team of football players from Detroit and the D2 scholarship limits would have no impact.

Tuition pledge programs - Financial Aid - Wayne State University

Well, there is the room and board component. True they live in Detroit, but may prefer to live on or near campus. For example, I went to U of D and was a Detroit resident. I stayed on Campus back then.
