you happen to surf around the internet and see some of our f*cking tornado coverage that stretches for HOURS?!?!
It isn't about liberal media or conservative media, or however you want to spin it. He is the head of a community, and in the limelight. It comes with the territory of taking these positions. He isn't just a football coach, but a mentor to young men to do right. He screwed up, and he deserves to be in the news for it. You, no one knows what you do. Tens of thousands of people know what he does. That is the difference.

I am not saying what his punishment should be. I am in no place to offer any sort of defense of his actions, regardless of his extenuating circumstances. I get that PTSD is hard, it led directly to alcoholism and death of one of my best friends, but she didn't drive, and thankfully, the rest of her family she left on this world quit drinking altogether. The older brother of another one of my friends was a victim of a drunken driver, and she is also a victim of a drunken driver and spent weeks in a coma with a traumatic brain injury. So, no, I do not exactly want to see the courts take into account his personal issues and community standing when deciding his punishment. Dustin and Ashley were kids when they were killed/hurt, and thousand of other people never got the opportunity to see the court's decisions against their defendants.

Dorrel is lucky he got to walk away from this with his life, and so are anyone else that was around when he was on the road. I hope he gets the help he needs, but I also don't think the legal system of UCO should take it easy on him.
I completely understand where you are coming from. I too know both sides of the fence, more than I ever wanted to or thought I would. Knowing the people that are talking about this and know AD better than I, this incident was completely out of character for him. Should he be punished? Yes. But he doesn't need to have his life thrown in the crapper either.

There are significant issues at play in this situation that I'm aware of and not at liberty to post. Even if I were, I wouldn't. AD is a good coach, a good person, a good husband and a good father. So, I'm asking for a little compassion, a little latitude. Let this play out with UCO and the legal system.

How much latitude would you be willing to grant him had he killed one of your family members with his decision? Because if that happened and you could still say "but he's a good person" than you are a better person than me.

Yes, I want him to get the help he needs. Because I want him to have a second chance to be father and husband. He deserves that and deserves to work through his issues.

But no issues anyone is going through, ever, allows them to put other's lives in danger. Not when there are so many options now a days to not be in that situation.

So drunk driving and tornado coverage is political? Talk about "over the top".

I didn't say he didn't deserve punishment. He does according to the law. Stop crucifying the man on what ifs.

It often takes severe consequences to spur a person to get help. If it nukes his life for a while, that may be what he needs.

I'm fine with whatever it takes for him to get help.

Damn, some people in this thread live in some nice glass houses. There are a lot of ways this situation could be viewed, but “what if” should be reserved for those of us without stupid choices of our own… so I’m out.

That said, UCO has a difficult choice to make here. As insensitive as this sounds, their decision shouldn’t solely be based on what is good for AD.

All that aside, Coach Dorrel is clearly struggling with his mental health and alcoholism. He has a strong family/friend support system and I sincerely hope he can lean on that. We all struggle and it’s trust in our loved ones that carries us through.

                    No judgement here

AD has probably been coaching his entire life since college and still has PTSD during that entire time. And some of you think it would be best for him to keep coaching so his life isn't ruined.

How about he gets help and tries recovery without the stress of a head coaching position. I think that's exactly what he needs. Obviously it hasn't happened while he is coaching football.

People deal with PTSD in different ways. This doesn't make what he did right, but it does offer some perspective. I'm a second chance kind of guy. I would be ok with something like losing his license for a year, suspension for a few games, and most importantly, mandatory counseling so he can try and move forward.

On a lighter note....was that the Bronco Sasquatch package? Nice ride.

I've worked as a local and Federal Law Enforcement Officer and have been diagnosed with PTSD. I was able to continue working due being treated properly until my recent retirement.

The same with a ton of my friends.

Quitting something you love is one of the worst treatments for PTSD unless you absolutely can't handle it anymore.
