This is why I love WT Alums/Posters. WT signs a 4A QB that received small town Texas hype and was the town football stud.....at 6' 175 lbs (or maybe somehow he gained 20 lbs since August) he is automatically being compared to both a FBS (real D1) HEISMAN candidate and an NFL Super Bowl MVP.

Reading comprehension isnt as sharp in the winter.

I was comparing the physical stats, not the talent level.

Dillon Gabriel is another short QB that made it through the ranks.

If (again I said if) he is successful at WT, he will get FCS (which is D1) looks.

From my casual independent sources the kid wanted to be close to home and WT definitely checks that box.

Having the opportunity to compete for the job doesnt hurt either.

I could care less about his height and weight when he had the heart to beat Stephenville and scored the last time he held the ball against Celina to take a lead in 2024.

Yeah, I forgot....the Napoleon complex or big fish, little pond, etc...

I was always part of the "big boys" in HS and University. I can not relate. 99.9999% of the time I see these guys get eaten up when they try to pkay the"big boys". BUT.....every once in a while you get the one who comes along and CAN compete.

And it appears as if WT posters believe this kid is it. Will be a great get if it c9mes to fruition.

Enter the portal, transfer to ETAMU, win a natty for them, enter the portal, transfer to Texas win the starting job, win Texas a natty, be MVP, win the Heisman. Declare for NFL draft. Become 1st pick in the 1st round. Get selected by the Houston Texans. Become a rookie starter. Win Houston their first Super Bowl. Break every QB record ever set. And become rhe highest paid QB in all NFL history. Rules will be changed and he will be entered into the NFL Hall of Fame as a rookie. And ALL BECAUSE he signed to play at WTAMU.

Boredom and the off season so wanted to counter and throw an exception to the Texas 4A stuff which I did and get a more detailed annoyed response which I did.😂

At this point WT fans would be thrilled to see anyone lead them to a 9-2 record and a first round playoff shellacking loss at Harding.

Lets hope Reid is the guy and if not he gets to play somewhere and complete his college education for the real world after.

A group posted a question on X asking who they think the next D2 teams will be to move to D1 in football. One poster said, "I see West Florida, Ferris State, Augustana, and West Texas A&M moving up once the moratorium runs out next February." Does anyone know as it pertains to WT if there's any real possibility of this?

WT is always on the short list, because they are one of the larger enrollment schools in D2. The average enrollment of a D2 school is 2500. WT is about 4 times that last I heard.

Back when I lived there, there were a lot of WT supporters who said they wanted the school to move up, but I don't think there was grass roots support for it, in terms of meaningful corporate and booster dollars. Although there should be. Most WT "boosters" considered themselves big shots because they gave $20 a month. And many of those were conditional supporters. If something/someone made them mad, they quit giving their $20 a month, and brag to everyone about it. WT supporters didn't seem to have any concept of REAL, sustained financial commitment to a program. Yet they wanted to be D1. Never made sense.

But as I mentioned, certainly there should be adequate financial backing to make the move. WT is the only university in the Amarillo MSA, which is around 300,000 if I recall correctly. Doesn't take a genius to figure out there are people and companies with disposable income with that sort of population to support at least a Southland or WAC level program, and probably more if truth be told.

Years ago, WT would say things like "we want to be good in D2 and win championships." I translated that as "we don't want to have to work at this." Laziness might be too harsh. Maybe a persistent, hard-wired inferiority complex and lack of any real vision would be more accurate. If you can convince everyone that the safety and security of status quo is a win, you've got no real accountability. To me, that has been WT defined.

I think WT missed their best chance in the mid 2010s when football was at their peak and ACU moved up.

The "youth" now sees WT football like the Dallas Cowboys as a relic of the past with stories from their parents about the good ol' days.

Short answer is things will not change in Canyon until Wendler moves on.
