    This is a common misconception. The academic standards are higher in D2 than D3 and higher in D1 than D2.

    NAIA would be a really dumb move. The other thing that has to be considered here- faculty. I know that the Augie faculty is worried about "maintaining their standards" in a D1 move (yes, mostly concerned about football). The NAIA academic standards are not as stringent as NCAA ones. You would get a lot of resistance going that direction.

    I think that Birmingham Southern did the same thing- directly from D1 to D3. They were D1 for three years then dropped down in 2006.

    Savannah State will be in D2 next year, dropping down from D1. It isn't all roses.

    Centenary did. We were just talking about them at the regional game at Augie today. They had been the smallest school in D1 and didn't have football.
