As an example, for men's sports the NSIC allows 60 scholarships, and you give 36 for football, you are only allowed 24 for the rest of your NSIC men's sports (baseball, basketball, track, wrestling, etc.).
No, there is not a limit like that but each sport has their own maximum scholarship equivalents set by the NCAA. What schools do have to watch out for is Title IX though. Across the board they have to have the same amount or more women’s scholarships (available and funded) and total athletes. This is obviously a challenge with football as women don’t have a comparable sport that is so large. That is a whole other topic, but to answer your question they can fully fund every sport possible to NCAA limits as long as men don’t have more scholarships available than women.

I think the scholarships offered to men and women must be in proportion to their respective enrollments.

Correct. If your enrollment is 55% female and 45% male, then the scholarship ratios and roster opportunities have to reflect that.

If I recall correctly, when the NSIC was capped for football at 28, they also had a department wide cap of something like 45-48 scholarships on the men's side (and also on the women's side). That meant that there were only 17-20 scholarships available for other men's sports if you were fully maxed out in football. But as njmav1 posted, when the NSIC went to allowing fully funded football programs, they did away with those limits. Here are the current limits in place for D-II.

It's been years since I knew more about this, but there is three pieces of criteria that you can meet if your T9 numbers do not meet the standards. One was showing investment in advancement of women's athletics or something to that effect.

I wish I remembered more. This was way back when the board of regents wanted NSU to start up womens hockey to which the administration just laughed, essential.

As a hockey fan, that's really random. No offense to NSU but they just aren't a hockey school.

Granted, I doubt the Board really thought that clearly about it.

Didn't UMD get sued over it too? Maybe the years have mixed that with SCSU and the firing of the Women's Hockey coach up there

I believe that is why the idea was proposed....because no one was a hockey school. Unfortunately, womens hockey is expensive and doesn't bring in much so that's why the idea was supposedly laughed out.

Couldn't you say Augie is random because they arent a hockey school because...idk they didn't have hockey? Lol

I didn't think Aberdeen would support hockey but when they added the Aberdeen Wings years ago and built up the facility, it has led to sellouts and success so there is definitely more of an appetite for hockey than I ever thought there would be.

I believe UMD has had a few lawsuits but idk if it was Title IX related or not

Obviously NSU is a 'non-hockey' school in a literal sense. I was speaking in terms of culture. Any school *can* add hockey, and many have the means to do so - but it just doesn't make sense for some schools to add regardless of their means. MSUM or Minot State are examples of schools where that culture is already present and hockey would make some kind of sense assuming they could afford it. It's not a sport for everyone.

And that's not a knock on NSU by any means. It's just the reality.

As far as Augie goes - you are correct. Several years ago I pegged SDSU as the most likely candidate for college hockey in SoDak and never thought twice about Augie. In hindsight, seeing as how the Stampede have some of the highest attendance in the USHL and Brookings couldn't keep the Blizzard - among other things, Augie has much better potential. Not to mention there was a rumor that SDSU declined the opportunity.

Good to hear the Wings have a solid following. They would be my NAHL team of choice if Fairbanks wasn't the local team. I know the Wings had 3 Alumni on the same Hobey Baker ticket a couple years ago, which is pretty neat and I think made a deep playoff run.
