  • Things to do in the NSIC

Figured this could be a helpful thread for travelers going to away games in NSIC cities. It can include restaurants, things to do, etc. Having lived in both Fargo-Moorhead and Bemidji, here’s what I can share:

    Fargo-Moorhead
    • For breweries to visit, the most notable are Drekker in Fargo and Junkyard in Moorhead
    • The Spitfire Bar and Grill is good for BBQ
    • Mexican food, Paradiso is a good pick
    • For pizza, my favorite is Spicy Pie, which has NY style by the slice. Pizza Patrol in Moorhead is a good late night delivery option
    • The Old Broadway in downtown Fargo is a good bar/grill option in downtown Fargo
    • Sandy’s Donuts is a good spot to visit on gameday because they usually make donuts with school colors from MSUM, NDSU and Concordia
    • The Fargo Theatre is a great place to visit to see a movie if you’re staying for a while. It’s a historic location downtown and usually plays good stuff.
    • The other two theaters, West Acres and Century by the mall are good for more mainstream releases, too. They have a combined 24 screens
    • Speaking of the mall, it’s a fairly good size, single-floor shopping center.
    • The Fargo Air Museum has a variety of cool aviation stuff to look at, it’s right across from the Fargodome.
    • Near downtown is the Plains Art Museum, which is North Dakota’s largest.
    Bemidji
    • Bemidji Brewing is definitely worth visiting, it has a solid selection.
    • For a good bar/grill type place, Bar 209 in downtown is one of the best in the city
    • On Beltrami Ave there’s both Brigid’s Pub, a traditional Irish place, and Keg N’ Cork, which is a classic dive type place with basket food and drinks
    • Minnesota Nice Cafe is a classic diner place that’s a good breakfast option.
    • For coffee, I’d recommend Cantabria in downtown, it’s one of my favorite coffee shops.
    • Bemidji’s theatre is an eight screen place. It’s actually just a bit outside of the city limits but still something to do
    • Bemidji does have a mall. Not the biggest but it has a Kohl’s and Dunham’s Sports.

    In Bemidji:

Fozzie's BBQ is the bomb! We took my son's youth hockey team there and the parents and kids all raved about their food.
Dave's Pizza is the spot to hit if you are looking for pizza. They open at 4 PM and can fill up very fast, but do have carry out and delivery.

(There are people that will argue Keith's Pizza, but I am a Dave's fan)

The Keith’s vs Dave’s is definitely an argument for some, I like both, but we had Dave’s most recently and loved it.

with the Bemidji spots…Minnesota Nice Cafe has amazing breakfast. (Haven’t had lunch there)

Fozzie’s is a must, at least once.

Tapatios is a Mexican place that is very good.

For the earlier season games, there is a new (2-3 years old?) mini golf place, Boardwalk, on the south shore near the hotels.

Most are familiar with Itasca State Park, but the Lake Bemidji State Park is fun to check out and not far from The Chet

        Marshall:

-As a student I loved being able to go to the VB game before/after the FB game. You obviously sacrifice on tailgating, but I've seen some heavy matchups and it's a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

-The greater SMSU community is putting an emphasis on tailgating this season, and I know they want to get visiting fans involved.

-Camden State Park is the biggest natural attraction I can think of, but the Redwood River runs through town and there are all kinds of little parks and things on it throughout town.

-Hunan Lion (Chinese), Chicken Connection (Chicken), Varsity Pub/Wooden Nickel/Hitching Post (Burgers) are all good. Varsity Pub is the only place I can think of with local pizza, but I've never tried it. Not sure about Mexican food.

        Mankato:

-Catch the hockey team if they play in the evening after a football game.

-I've yet to visit Minneopa, but Spring Lake Park and the Kasota Prairie are my favorite local natural attractions in the area. Sibley Park has the petting zoo. All kinds of little spot along the river, including one right by the Belgrade in NKato where there is a perfect view of the big mural.

-Pub500/Rounder's/Ummie's/The Flask for downtown bar food. Weggy's in the University Square for bar food near campus. Zanz on Madison for chilitos. Dino's in NKato for pizza (never been to Jake's on Stadium, so can't say). They recently opened up a Giliberto's on Madison which is the best Mexican place as far as I can tell. Huge Chinese buffet near Hobby Lobby.

-Pro-tip: if you need a hotel room and don't mind an extra drive, St. Peter can be cheaper to stay in (sometimes) especially if nothing is going on at Gustavus.

        Sioux Falls:

-Favorite natural attractions are Falls Park and Terrace Park. Highly recommend catching a movie at the beautiful State Theater downtown. Usually something going on somewhere in town.

-Too many food places to name, but I love Bread and Circus, Simon's Tacos (get the birria), Pizza Shop, and Boss's Pizza. There's a place across from USF called Sunny's Pizzeria that I haven't tried yet but have heard good things about. Haven't been in the Jones Seed building in a while - heard some of their food options are down because of building issues, but Flying Santo has been a quick go-too for me. Can't remember the name of the restaurant near USF's football stadium that's popular on the board.

-You're in between SDSU and USD, and I've definitely mixed and matched sporting events between them and the SF schools. Something to keep in mind.

Also in DT Kato on Front St. there's a place called Maverick's - it's a fairly new sports bar/grill type place that is all out on MSU, and not just hockey. I haven't been in there yet but it looks cool. Next to Za's Pizza, which is another new place I need to visit.

Locale Brewery in Downtown Mankato. Excellent, clean. Lots of different beers on tap!!!

Josiah’s Coffeehouse, Cafe & Bakery in downtown Sioux Falls is a great place for breakfast or brunch.

                    For Winona
Boat House - our only restaurant on the river. Delicious Juicy-Lucy made with Nelson cheese curds.
Roccos - best pizza in town, try the Rocco taco if feel adventurous.
Sliced - cool newish restaurant downtown. Haven't been dissapointed with a meal there.
Two Fathoms Brewerey (formerly Island City) - local brewery with tons of Iive music.
Ive heard rumors we are getting a whiskey bar soon which makes me very excited.

                      My favorites foods in Winona
1). Bubs Brewing (funny enough pronounced boobs)
                      2). Sliced (pizza)
                      3). Backwater BBQ
                      4). El Patron (Mexican)
                      5). Erbert & Gerbert's (Sandwhiches)

When you are in Winona, you are only 30 minutes or less from La Crosse Wisconsin. La Crosse has a ton of restaurants and things to do .

Winona has many activities around the river and in the bluffs. Right time of year, you can ride on an old paddlewheel boat. There is a boat that takes you on a tour of the river. When I went, I saw like 15 eagles.

I enjoy running the trails to the top of Sugarloaf Bluff. You can also drive up to a bluff to overlook the river etc as well.

If you play disc golf, check out the course behind Saint Mary's. It's wooded, hilly and just all around awesome.

Bemidji -- you have to go see Paul Bunyun and Babe. Also Itasca and the Mississippi Headwaters are close.

Dave's Pizza in Bemidji is my go to place
