  • Jordan Fee named HC at Lamar

Former Gannon HC is now the head coach at Lamar.

Fee obviously has ties to Jim Crutchfield both at West Lib and at NovaSE.

Jeff O'Malley is the AD. He was a former associate AD at Marshall and interim AD as well.

He replaces Alvin Brooks who was an alum of Lamar and former Kelvin Sampson assistant. Brooks won 19 games and 20 games the prior two seasons. This year he had some injuries and only won 12.

Lamar supports athletics so he will have a decent budget to work with.

It'll be interesting to see two versions of "The System" in D1 at the same time. Obviously wasn't how Howlett wanted it to go this year. (That's assuming Fee sticks with it).

Im guessing he doesnt implement the system. I figured if he was going to it would've been mentioned in the release something about him bringing his unique style etc. But who knows.

I think they’ll play up tempo, but with him spending the last couple years at fairly high level D1 program, I too would be surprised if he goes full Crutchball

Just read an article confirming Fee is definitely running the system at Lamar... has 3 D2 transfer@ committed already (from Washburn, Augustana and DBU).

hes quoted as saying Lamar is going to play the fastest paced basketball of any team in the country.

Wish him the best - i just personally dont think "The System" will be sustained success in D1. He could make it work at Lamar, but if he intends to move up the coaching ranks.. its not going to work in the Big boy conferences.

The toughest part these days is going to be sustaining it year-over-year. Not only do you have to bring in D1 bodies that buy into the system, but you have to teach it to an entirely new group of players every year after the previous year's lineup all transfers out. That's the issue IU Indy ran into, they showed some promising signs but they still got slammed with transfers even though they finished last in the Horizon.

Besides the transfer challenge that you mentioned, the open question that I have is whether that one can recruit D1-level talent players that are unselfish and fundamentally sound to play the style. Indy made things interesting at Ohio State with d2 players that were athletically outmatched. But higher level talent is required to win consistently.

                      No, I don't think.

If they could, it would have been copied already up there.

The trouble Ben will have is even if he gets a group in there and they have success, they'll all bounce immediately for greener ($) pastures. Loyalty is an obsolete term.

Low-level D1 pre-Portal madness? Maybe. Today, serious doubts.

Leagues like the Horizon get players one step closer to making some serious NIL.

As we've become their farm system, they've become the farm system for the actual big boy programs.
