  • Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

Player....kid had at least one D-I offer back in the fall that I have been able to verify so far. Reminds me a lot of former Cleveland and AB all-conference player Kurklin Bohanon. Scary similar. Of course, Kurklin was instrumental in landing him and Carmon. Duncan Williams closed as a recruiter for us. Big potential and has skill on the wing/videos show talent...not just dunks....show some great stuff.

A few things that I found on Tyler Golphin:

NEO Spotlight had him listed as one of five players in the 2017 class that would have a breakout season. Golphin played this year with a big kid who signed Division I and two other players that signed JUCO:

I was also told that they are going hard after some real big-man prospects in hopes of landing one. There are some out there.

They have recruited to get Bocook to play the four which is where he is the most comfortable and can play bigger than his actual height. They want to get him at a position similar to what Richard Lemon played as he has similar abilities and maybe even better in many areas of his skill set. They also are getting enough talent to really start pushing the ball up the floor and having the ability/talent to create and score points in the open floor. Of course, we can revert to the half-court motion when necessary and when the game dictates that.

The Elite camp at Rex Pyles is slated for Saturday, June 3rd. It will be an all-day affair and the staff is bringing in prospects from the class of 2018.

Not that this has any thing to do with AB, but it is a former private school conference member of ours:

The Wheeling-Charleston Diocese has purchased Wheeling Jesuit. Surprisingly to many is that I have always heard this Diocese was one of the richest in the US but also very frugal with their finances.

Really good transfer signs with AB. He will have three years of eligibility left. He played last year on a team that was ranked very high most of the year in the polls before the team had issues and lost their last 5 game including the NCAA tournament. He got out there and moved to a school closer to home. He comes with a 3.0 GPA and a great attitude according to high school and college coaches. He was an excellent player in Columbia, MD....we got him by hard work by Williams and Malcolm Tatum (same hometown). More later.

Willis is another good get. Gives this team another high level shooter. This team can be really good next year. If everything stays the course the year after they will be scary good

Willis is extremely good and can flat shoot. His body has changed since high school...for the better. Ball handling skills are real good and he elevates off the floor on his jumper. If we get Carmon, Willis, Davis and Bocook on the floor, then that is some serious talent. We went hard after Willis coming out of high school. I mean real hard and got him to visit. Tarleton State was coming off an Elite Eight and a Final Four appearance. He was the first high school kid in 28 years that they signed that wasn't from Texas. Watching him do skill development is impressive.

I don't know names of people coming next weekend. I was told they had to cut it off at 45 kids which makes sense because if you are going to ask kids to come in, you want them all to feel as if they were evaluated with equal time. Of course, Rex Pyles has six baskets, so that gives you plenty of opportunity. I know it runs from 9-4. I was told most of the kids coming in are from Cleveland and Columbus areas. That is all I got. Staff is selling hard on the "being able to get away from home but being able to come back home and play in front of family". It is resonating well in what I believe is very fertile high school ground. For Saturday, every kid will get: (a) combine testing, (b)individual instruction and evaluation from AB staff, (c) offensive and defensive skill work and then (d) team play. They are provided a camp t-shirt, lunch and a campus tour.

Just by my calculations, we will have some slots to fill after next year's class graduates:

Chavez Harper, forward who plays 4 and 3.
Sam Sanders, guard who plays 1 and 2.
Mike Mitchell, forward/post who plays 4 mainly.
Ohndo Smith who I hear has done every thing asked to get back in good graces, post player.
                    Artice Jackson, swing player.

I do believe we have incredibly strengthened the team for this year by doing some subtracting from last year's squad. I have a few names that I think aren't coming back. Obvious some freshman left last year. But I am pretty confident it is not Sanders, Harper, Mitchell and Smith. I don't want to speculate until I get confirmation. It happens and sometimes has to happen. But nonetheless, the kids coming in this weekend will be told that we have quite a few seniors on this year's squad...so they will be performing for slots. Truthfully, a lot of those seniors will be in reserve roles this year and quality reserves at that. Sanders and Mitchell were real good at the end of last season.

I am looking forward to it. I will be there. How long I stay depends on if my tag-team partner comes along. I would like to stay all day. I am planning on talking to a few kids for the site.

Thinking of who has signed (Carmon, Jones, Willis, Mills), there has to be some attrition guard wise. Shamdeen gone, Haywood gone, and from what we've seen Wade is gone. What's the prognosis on Simmons? He was labeled as Tatums replacement. Did Robinson or Sanders leave?

If run properly, elite camps can be much more then a money maker. I'm looking forward to hearing your take on how the weekend goes.

Shamdeen and Haywood both picked up their degrees.
Butler and AJ Robinson left at the semester. AJ Robinson played at Mary Washington the second semester and had some nice games for a guy coming in at semester. He went 7 for 7 from 3-ball in one game. I don't know about Butler.
I believe Reggie Robinson is not coming back. I am pretty confident on that one. I could say more but will bite the tongue.
Ja'Darien Wade appears to have left. I liked him and he has talent. But nothing seemed to work out for him at ABU and he appeared to bail. His dad was a heck of a player at Huntington High back in the mid 90s (Donta Wade). His dad went JUCO and later started at Providence. I know his mom lives in Parkersburg and dad is in Huntington. I have heard OVU here and I heard WV Tech from someone else. I wish him luck. I don't know any thing officially.

Kevin Simmons was there this entire year. He rehabbed. i saw him workout in late February and he looked real good. He is a player on both ends of the floor. It hurts to come to Philippi as a freshman and have to sit out without being able to play ball. I can understand that. We schollied him and rehabbed his knee. However, I know he has a girlfriend from Brunswick that he was very close with. She got accepted into Kent State's nursing program and went to school there. I could see him getting homesick, moving closer to home (and her) and going to say Walsh. That would suck, but is a storng possibility imo. He is the one I would really hate to lose. But with so many guards being offered (especially those that run the point), I think this might be the case. It would be a huge plus if we could keep him. He is originally from Philly and played HS ball in Ohio.

I don't think Sanders is leaving. He seemed to like it up there and fit in with the players.

Yeah, I think this is more of a way to evaluate kids without having to constantly hit the road to do so. This brings talent to campus, you get to see how they handle coaching, how well they listen and how they perform against other talented players. They also get a chance to see our campus and know more about our program. It isn't really to make money, but more about being a small school and saving some on recruiting budget. I wasn't up there last year to see it.

Here is a workout video of Simmons. He had the AB gear on. I just notice his short-lateral movement with the ball-handling skills as someone who was coming off major knee surgery. That was February or March. He has a lot of Terrell Eargle in him (at least to me). I will say that because of his length, he doesn't necessarily have to run the point. He could really go at the three as well. This is a guy that had to take a lot of time off due to that injury. I know he was working out with Davis during second semester.

This is Willis working out at Tarleton. Granted these are all skeleton with no defensive player there. This was November.

Awesome probably to just me, but I really think Austin Upton was a very good player for PB this year!!! I am so pleased he is going to ABU. I thought he was the driving force behind their basketball team that won over 20 games and advanced to the state tournament. I don't think he should be judged by one bad game. He deserved 1st team all-state and I was glad the coaches saw it that way. I think this is actually a better get than any one will give credit for. He is a fun player to watch.
