  • Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

Good night for AB recruits in the WV North-South All-Star game. DeAundra Murphy was named South MVP with 25 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists to go along with two dunks. He led all scorers. Austin Upton more than held his own with 10 points for the North and won the free throw shooting contest in sudden death. The game was played in front of a sell-out crowd at the bubble dome in South Charleston.

It was announced a little while ago that we have offered Garrett Tipton '18 out of Bishop Hartley HS in Columbus, OH. He was one of the two most impressive players at the elite camp IMO. He is an impressive and talented 6'4 wing with good basketball skill, high basketball IQ and excellent athletic skills.

Tipton has offers from AB, Findlay, Wheeling Jesuit and Urbana (and probably others). He will be a tough get as other offers are sure to follow and the ones he has are impressive.

Sunahara has offers from AB and Lake Erie, but he is also far from done on the offer trail.

OOC games that I can confirm:

      Saturday, November 25 @ Concord
Saturday, January 6 @ Bluefield State

That makes 22 games now set. I am thinking the following games will happen for sure: @ Glenville State, @ UDC, Bowie State at home. I am thinking Salem at least once, maybe twice. That might be it with a 20-game conference schedule.

A couple of AB guys are playing in the Cleveland-Akron-Canton ProAM this summer.

In the first games, Mike Davis had 25 points. He is playing on the same team as Chavez as well as Braun Hartfield of YSU who avg 9 ppg this past season as a freshman for the Penguins and Nick Detlev who plays at UT-Martin. Chavez didn't play in the first game. Matt Watkins (who did attend AB last spring) also plays on that team.

Anthony Carmon had 15 points in his game. He is playing with Francisco Santiago who averaged 12 ppg at YSU two years ago and a couple of other notable players including the big guy from Cleveland who played up at Gannon.

Anthony Carmon has been named the Cleveland Pro AM Week 2 Player of the Week with 25 points and 10 rebounds in game 2. He is impressive as 3rd coast hoops does video highlights.

          Another OOC game:

Wednesday, November 15th @ Glenville State, 7 PM

            Just an update:

Ja'Darien Wade is heading to Louisburg College (D-II JUCO in North Carolina). They were 30-5 last season and went to the D-II NJCAA National Championship game before losing.

3 basketball players made the G-MAC All-Academic team. Philip Grant, Jordan Haywood and Mike Mitchell were on the list of students with a high GPA. Jordan Haywood graduated cum laude in May.

I thought the various sports were represented very well which is a good thing. Looked like women's cross-country and baseball were outstanding.

According to his twitter, Kevin Simmons is transferring to Walsh. What rules are in effect when transferring inside of the conference.

I have been keeping up with some of the players you spoke about from the elite camp and multiple guys have been offered from D1s and D2s

It hurts to come to Philippi as a freshman and have to sit out without being able to play ball. I can understand that. We schollied him and rehabbed his knee. However, I know he has a girlfriend from Brunswick that he was very close with. She got accepted into Kent State's nursing program and went to school there. I could see him getting homesick, moving closer to home (and her) and going to say Walsh. That would suck, but is a strong possibility imo. He is the one I would really hate to lose. But with so many guards being offered (especially those that run the point), I think this might be the case. It would be a huge plus if we could keep him. He is originally from Philly and played HS ball in Ohio.
I am not trying to sound like a know-it-all, but I figured this was what was going to happen and highlighted that about a month ago. I am 99.9% sure the staff knew this as we signed a boat-load of guard including PGs. We honored his scholarship after he got hurt, our school rehabbed his knee & quite frankly, we did more than a lot of schools do sometimes. And no sour grapes, but in the end, he Boo-Boo faced on the way out the door.....I will leave it at that. I don't know the whole story and all, but I thought he wasn't coming back by the way he tweeted in the end of April and May. Things may have turned out differently had he not got hurt and played this year (which he definitely would have). Like I said, he had a girl back in Ohio, he was out of basketball for a year, away from home and just going to school at AB. I think that hurt things. Maybe there is more to the story. I don't know. He and Ja'Darien would have made us better, but injuries are part of the game. Simmons reminded me a lot of Terrell Eargle, other than being left-handed. Both have went their separate ways. Nothing went right last year. Bocook was out the first eight or nine games which started us off horribly and the guy we wanted to start at the point got injured. Wade was injured in game one and wasn't going to re-gain major minutes right off the bat when he came back in January. He didn't like that, but.....Guys left and we went out and recruited hard. That is all you can do.

With that said, when one door closes, another one opens. If he and Ja'Darien (who both obviously weren't happy) don't leave, then do we get all the guys like Murphy, Carmon and Willis. I want guys that are committed and want to be there. All 3 are big gets and elevate the roster. Golphin had an offer to Bethune-Cookman (a real low D-I) but other offers as well. Chavez told me personally that former 1st-team JUCO All-American Mike Davis was good to go. I am not into predictions, but no way we are the same team this year as we were last season; not even close. And if the chips fall right, 2018-19 could be real legit. I have watched Carmon vids of high school games and current summer league games. I knew he could ball, but I never knew he was the athletic freak that he is. He took it on a break the other night and took the ball from his left hand in mid-air, pull the ball through his leg in the air to his right hand, and threw down a dunk. He threw it down from alley-oops, from breaking a defender down in half-court and making guys look silly in the open court. Dunks are ok & summer league play is inconsequential, but it was his pure athleticism that impressed me. He can flat defend too.

I don't know how Simmon's release works. He sat out all last year. Is he immediately eligible under NCAA rules? I don't have that answer. Releasing him free to a conference school that you play twice gets sticky. But you don't want to rock too many boats in an area you recruit, especially when it does appear that you have signed some quality players that make up that difference or more. But you don't want guys coming to school, getting a ride for a year and deciding to go home and play. Like I said, I felt he was gone a long time ago and kept my fingers crossed we might have that slight chance he would stay. But we recruited Mills, Jones, and Upton who ran the point in high school, and we still have Sanders who did well the second half of the season. If we get Bocook, Willis, Davis and Murphy on the floor, then we need a good passer and defender & not a score-first mentality.

I recall now you sort of calling that he may end up there. What about Reggie Robinson?

From what I have gathered from your feed and talks from elite camp, the following players have committed or received offers:

Augustine Noe - signed WV State
Calvin Wilder - signed Potomac State
                  Alex Heath- Urbana, Mercyhurst
Tre Baumgardner - Ashland, Minnesota State
Garrett Tipton - AB, Findlay, Wheeling Jesuit
RJ Sunahara - AB, Notre Dame, Lake Erie
Mason McMurray - High Point, Fairmont State, Notre Dame
Na'Elle Simmons - interest from Duquesne, Robert Morris, Youngstown State
Dale Bonner - Fairmont State, Northwood

                    • Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

RJ also got an offer from Tiffin. Tipton received an offer from Tiffin and Ashland. It appears Tipton is going to be worked out by some D-I schools. I believe Sunahara will get the same treatment. He is extremely skilled at the game of basketball for a player his size. I think it is great that we were able to get quality kids to come to our campus early on. I still believe the Sean Kelly kid out of Penn-Tadford is a good fall back player if our early offers go elsewhere. I know that kid runs the point for Penn Tadford but he has great ability to play the 2-guard at this level. Incredible basketball IQ just like Tipton. Excellent jumping ability for a kid 6'2". He gives you great depth at both guard positions during his early years of school and really a starter-type by his sophomore or junior season. His team did well with him in the lineup and terrible when he was injured with a high ankle sprain. He gets a full season in this year and offers will come. He has a great game in both transition and in the half-court. Just my opinion. The Heath kid is from Cleveland and knows a lot of our current players.

Another elite camp will take place Saturday, August 12th. I will make every effort to get there. I have had some foot surgeries recently which has cut into my doing stories on camp players on the site. I am hoping the McGrew kid from Winfield makes it. I would like to see him play. Some former Zimmerman players are coaching in the mountain state...Adam Kline at Winfield, Adam Scott at Buffalo and Zach Green at Logan. The other Noe kid from Logan was pretty good at the elite camp.

Former Alderson Broaddus head coach Dave Barksdale who coached Beckley to tons of AAA titles is coming back to the sidelines of Beckley Woodrow Wilson as an assistant coach. A great coach!!!! I will enjoy that guy while he is still around.

Adam Williams has signed some really good JUCO players at Salem, one is a really good guard out of Memphis, TN who played JUCO ball in Texas. He also signed the talented Lee kid who played on Fairmont Seniors back-to-back state championship teams. He shut down Frampton (headed to Davidson) in the second half of the North-South all-star game. They don't win that game without his defense. I go back with Adam and his dad Tex, who happened to coach at AB for a year (87-88). Tex had some unreal teams at University of Charleston in the mid-80s. That was a heck of an era in WVIAC basketball.

Summer gets kind of old and boring. With that said, I like to do research thru my archive of Battler clippings and materials. We won a 121-119 thriller over Davis & Elkins this past February to close out the regular season. That game was won in 4 overtimes on a last second runner. Has Rex Pyles Arena ever had an Alderson Broaddus game go longer than 4 overtimes? It is an interesting question that has even sparked the interest of our current SID this evening (and he is a good one). I did tons of research & digging and have the answer. I will share tomorrow.

For long-time guys, this is great news as this rivalry resumes. The teams met long before the WVIAC was formed. Long overdue as these two teams resume what should have never ended as only 22 miles separate these two great campuses. I am excited to see this one back:
