Hats off to the football team for playing a good game today against Hillsdale. I realize it was a loss, but they were much better today with a lot of young talent. We had some tough breaks today, but we lost 37 seniors last year and growing pains had to be expected. That fumble at the Hillsdale 1 yard line and the 99 yard return off that fumble for a TD killed us. We should have been up 31 to 14 at half. Bentley looks good at QB for a true freshman and top targets return next year. 344 yards passing and some nice drives. I couldn't tell on that pass in the 3rd quarter. The announcer said it looked like a TD, but I couldn't tell. They ruled it incomplete and two players later we throw the pick. I still thought the effort was very good.

I was so sure AB had a W. Ad was on the internet during that play.

I don't know when I will have time to be honest. Maybe Friday if I get a chance. Life is currently busy.

We better strap it on this weekend. Both Wayne State and Lake Superior State return some heavy artillery from last season. And Wayne added a serious D-I transfer. They are only broadcasting the Wayne State games on video this weekend and you have to pay for that. It was crappy two years ago when I paid. When we play LSSU, you won't get to watch it which is Mickey Mouse when Wayne made a big stink about hosting this. How hard is it for a school of 27,000 in a city like Detroit to find one work-study student to run a camera for two hours? A school of 1100 students in a town with a population of 2000 broadcasts almost every sporting event on video and musical productions for free.

Wayne State beat D-I Detroit Mercy the other night. WSU was 16-10 last year. Latin Davis transferred into Wayne State from Youngstown State. He is a player at 5'11". He had 19 points on 9 of 11 shooting and 9 boards in his debut against Detroit Mercy. Wayne State also returns 4 of their top 5 scorers from last season. These guys are all seniors too and have played together for awhile. Ronald Booth at 5'7" averaged 15 ppg, Chuck Key at 6'8" averaged 14.5 ppg, Marcus Moore averaged 13 ppg and George Spencer averaged 8 ppg. Their only loss from last year was a guy who averaged 9 ppg. They put Latin Davis in his place.

Lake Superior returns their top players from a team that was 16-10 last year and won 6 out of their last 8 regular season games before falling to Ashland by 3 in the GLIAC tourney. Akaemji Williams averaged 21.5 ppg and 8 assists. He is a 5-8 point. Carson Manger at 6'2" averaged 11.7 ppg and 4.6 rpg. Michael Nicholson averaged 11.6 ppg and 4.7 rpg at 6'9". Blake Marquardt averaged 9.2 ppg and 3.1 rpg at 6'4". They beat Indiana Tech in a scrimmage. IT has already defeated the defending NAIA champ and #2 rated team in NAIA.

The roster is up. That is certainly an upgrade in talent from last year. We needed to upgrade and we did. The problem is not talent, but the fact that some of the new talent that will play a lot has not played as much together as the two teams we are facing. Two tough openers for the G-MAC schools which are inexperienced and take on two seasoned teams. I would take a split, but that will be tough.

As usual you info is dead on. You answered your own question answer is "Detroit"

We have the same issue with new players from different styles and a different coach. Any one of them would be a good addition but when adding eight takes time to jell.

Wayne State beat Detroit Mercy last season, too. Detroit Mercy seems to be a pretty bad D1 team.

Isn't Detroit Mercy a hospital? :) I wrote to G-MAC commish and said he should call Wayne State and get games on video.

A good player. I saw Juan Elmore was offered by WV State. I think Curtis is a good player. I think Juan has incredible skills and a great body for D2. My question on Elmore is his motor.

Murphy came to school for a month, withdrew or whatever before the first practice, and announced he will transfer to Marshall to walk-on. I thought he was a great signee but never thought he would stick 4 years though (would go the Browning route). I think though he really messed himself up. He signed for scholarship, he stays a month, leaves, will have to sit for a year and won't be eligible until next January and will actually be a sophomore when he finally becomes eligible. I don't understand why he just didn't finish the year and then get a release. I heard he was homesick. If he wanted that route, I don't understand why he just didn't prep a year as well. But to leave at the end of September off a full-ride is mind-boggling. His one knock is his extremely thin frame. My thing is that he came up there with it. He would have had a harder time with his offensive and defensive game at the college level compared to the Single A level in high school with that type of frame. It looked like he never touched a weight in the spring and summer. You have to lift and do plyos in this day and age. It is what it is, but we move on. He is talented though.

If you wanted to get the best four out there at the same time it would probably be Bocook, Davis, Willis and Sanders (having him run the point). We need someone else to step up beyond that. Ohndo Smith is a giant but has also, and I have to bite my tongue, not always gotten with the program. Dortch has a good looking frame and muscular development for a player that young. He fits Zimmerman's system. The problem is how long does it take to pick it up. I am glad Jackson is back. Talent unreal but again, he has to pick things up. He could really be an asset or he could just sit on the bench. Mitchell gives all that he has and came on strong at the end of last season. Chavez has tools and knows how to play the system, but he has to play consistent and intense the whole time he is out there. Wright can shoot, but his defense isn't ready. Jones should help us. Mills was thought highly of coming in and played against some Ohio's top players. Unlike Murphy, Mills seems to really like it there academically and overall life at the school.

I don't know who will start. Bocook and Davis would be locks in my mind. Willis is talented and has the right body for college. His defense needed work coming out of high school. But the staff worked hard to recruit him to AB out of high school. He went to Tarleton which is no slouch. He was recruited by the Bowies, Shepherds, etc (also very good programs). I want to see who steps up as a 5th guy. We lost to Wayne State by 20 last year. That was without Bocook. Moore and Booth made us look absolutely silly in that game, and I would think the current players would be watching film constantly on those guys after that debacle. We were 1-7 without Bocook and 15-7 with him. He needed help though. I think the supporting cast is much better, but games will show. If Murphy was going to pull that stunt, we could have offered another big transfer instead. A split would be nice this weekend and then go into Glenville and Bowie with the need to win two critical games there and put us off to 3-1 start. A sweep up at Detroit would be sweet, but it will be tough going against two very experienced teams. That is why I would have liked us to finally host this and at least played this on our court. It is what it is. It isn't the end of the world if we lose the first two especially if we are extremely competitive. I really think Glenville and Bowie are the two games that will begin to define how the months of November and December go. We have lost two in-a-row to Glenville and absolutely blew it against them last year in a game we should have never lost.

I don't know what to expect tonight. I will make every effort to watch. We always start slow and that is not excuse. We need to compete and have a chance at the end to win.

Upcoming opponents and what they did (in bold):

Bowie State beat Shepherd in Shepherdstown last night. They got a big regional road win there and will look to come to Rex Pyles for a regional road win on us. I am interested to see what Bowie does today against Wheeling. They held a 10 point margin most of the night. That will be a big game next Saturday at Rex Pyles. Playing a Coach Brooks team will continue to get us ready for conference play.

Concord won on the road over Fayetteville State. Bolte had 40 points. Another key road game over Thanksgiving break.

I thought WV Wesleyan gave Marshall a lot of trouble in the exhibition. Marshall never stopped Luke Layhew in the post. I do think Wesleyan may be the team that is up higher than their pre-season ranking. They have recruited well for two years. With Shepherd and Notre Dame both losing on MEC floors last night, Wesleyan looks like they could be in the mix. Glenville State and Wesleyan open today against PSAC schools in Glenville. Wheeling had to struggle in OT to beat Gannon over here at Shepherd last night. Their depth looks suspect. I also think Finlay will administer a beat-down to Fairmont State this week.

Scrimmages don't mean much, but D&E went to WV Tech and took them to the woodshed with balanced scoring. Tech had gone to Glenville State and beat the Pioneers on the road a week earlier. I felt D&E would probably not be too bad without Bracey-Davis.

                                31-31 at the half.

                                A few thoughts....

We are going to have to rebound better if we are going to continue to play zone.

Mike Davis needs to quit shooting bad shots. I am glad Zimmerman keeps benching him. Wright stepped up good in his place.

Anthony Mills is poised as a freshman on the road against a senior-laden squad. He is smooth with the ball. He and Willis do a good job together. I just wish Davis would get out of JUCO mode.

No Sanders yet??? Jarrell Jones was in foul trouble in first three minutes. I thought Willis got completely mugged on that last possession but no call, especially after all those tight calls. Malik hasn't hit a stride yet.

We were down 44-9 to them last year. Same Wayne team. It will be tough to win this, but this team is playing tough so far with tons of mistakes. Bench has given us 10 points to their 2 bench points.
