  • Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

We are looking for a new head women's basketball coach.

This needs to be a careful and thoughtful hire as we have not been competitive in women's basketball for some time. There are a couple of avenues that we could go with this hire. You could always go with an assistant with connections to good recruits.

It may not hurt to look at a head coach that has been successful at a private school in a rural setting. Anne Crutchfield at Emory & Henry College would be a GREAT HIRE in ole JDon's opinion. Emory & Henry is a private school, strong academics and is in a rural setting. In the three seasons prior to her taking over the Wasps, they went 6-20, 7-18 and 2-20. In her four seasons at E&H, they have gone 15-13, 19-8, 19-8 and this season 23-7 and are heading to the NCAA D-III tournament. She was a successful high school coach at the 6A level as well. She also has a strong academic background and has the capability to teach a couple of positions at the school where we have a need. I think we have to be a little aggressive on this hire. It has been a long time since we have had a winning season in women's basketball. We really need to get a good hire on this one.

I am hearing that former Glenville State women's coach Steve Harold may be interested in the women's job. He is currently the AD at Warren Local HS in Vincent, OH.

He won big at Glenville where I believe he hosted a few NCAA regionals there and won a lot of WVIAC crowns. He left there and went to Drury and ended at St. Joseph's right before they closed.

He coached at Glenville for 12 years compiling a 262-107 record. In his last season, he took GSC to the Elite 8 after compiling a 33-3 record that year. He was also the National Coach of the Year. He won 5 WVIAC regular season titles, 3 WVIAC tournament titles and went to two Elite 8s. He went 129-52 at Drury.

If Harold applies for the job, AB would do well to hire him on the spot. The man can coach and has been a big winner everywhere he's ever been.

I agree 100%. I think Steve has wanted to find a job in WV the past several years but never found the right one. I know for a fact that he applied for the Ripley (WV) HS head boys basketball job a couple of years ago but took his name out of the running. He also brought his St. Joseph's squad over to Alderson Broaddus for a game about 3 to 4 seasons ago. I watched his teams for many a year at Glenville. He did a tremendous job....the best I ever saw on the women's side in the WVIAC. He also did it in that old gym up on the hill. They had a huge following when he was a coach there. Sometimes as you get older, you find a position like he has now and feel comfortable doing that, comfortable taking a little more salary, comfortable in settling in a nice area, etc. With only one year removed from being a head coach, I am hoping he still finds a fire to get back into it. I just wonder though if he looks at it as too much of a challenge considering the strength of some of the Ohio programs in the G-MAC. I could easily see him wait for a MEC program to open up and apply for it. The MEC is not nearly as strong in women's hoops and not quite the region as the Midwest is on the women's side of things. I know he took the Drury job because he felt he had all the necessary resources to win a national championship. When he left Glenville, he felt he took that program as far as he could.

We just need to make a good hire here. We have been down for so long in women's hoops, but yet have the ability to be better.

Stephen Dye, an AB Hall of Famer, resigns today as Glenville's men's coach. Would he want to coach women's ball? He was at GSC for nine years.

He can coach. He did some good things at Glenville. His recruiting fell off towards the end at Glenville which really hurt him although that is probably the most rural school area in WV....very isolated. It isn't easy to recruit kids there year-in and year-out. I just don't know if he has any HS girl contacts for recruiting. Right now I feel that is a big problem with the women's team. We need to get some better players in there. He would need a good assistant for recruiting purposes I feel. I just don't know if he is interested in coaching on the women's side. He will get hired somewhere as an assistant on the men's side. He would also fit in well at the D3 level as a head coach. I know Glenville hired a first year AD from the state of Washington. I heard that he was hard to get along with. This didn't come from Dye either. Ii know two people that work and live there. Change always happens with first year ADs. They want their own people and tend not to look at past accomplishments and live for their current moment.

I watched part of the softball game yesterday with UC. Charleston had a nice video and broadcasting production. The guy calling the game was very good.

The new coach will have some players to build off of:

Myriam Garcia at 6'2" showed a ton of promise and I thought was our best player this year. 11.2 ppg and 6.1 rpg. She can go inside or out and has 2 years left
Danielle Franklin has 2 years left and averaged 10.2 ppg.
Ta"Sharra Jeffries has 1 year left. She averaged 9.0 ppg/58 steals and 4.3 rpg. She needs to be under control at times.
Devyn Bonner has 2 years left and averaged 6.6 ppg and 4.3 rpg. She appears to have trouble staying eligible.

Telling stat for the ladies is 289 assists to 495 turnovers. That is awful. They need a rock-solid point guard to be brought in. A quality wing and forward is also needed. They are going to have to have some immediate contributions from the incoming recruiting class. That is why this is a critical time for the program. There are some starting points already in place, but they need some players around them and some coaching. You can't win games turning the ball over an average of 19 times a game.

We offer 6'6" wing player Travis Weaver out of Raceland, KY. Appears to be able to have really good range. He visited ABU.

Great win for the Herd! I am so glad for Dan D'Antoni. His hire was criticized in so many avenues when he was hired. That program was a bus will four flat-tires and wheels falling off when he took over four years ago. He has had back-to-back 20 win seasons, a CUSA tourney runner up, a CUSA tournament championship, the first NCAA bid in 31 years and today a NCAA tournament win. What makes me proud of this state native is that he did it with 9 WV boys on the roster, 3 WV boys in the starting lineup, 2 WV natives as assistant coaches. He has done a heckuva job in four years at Marshall.

A couple of good-looking high school prospects on campus yesterday:

Byron Taylor, a 6'1" guard from Warren JFK HS (OH). He averaged 25.5 ppg this past season and was a 1st-team Division IV all Ohio selection.
Tyler James, a 6'6" forward also from Warren JFK. He aveaged 13.6 ppg, 10.8 rpg and 4 blocks this past season.

Roy Boggess has been named head women's basketball coach. Here is one thing I noticed: he has been with winning programs wherever he has been at. No losing....smaller levels....but winning! He is probably late 30s in age but also has head coaching experience. He also seems to teach the fundamentals of the game and appreciates that aspect. He also has experience at coaching at a rural school and excelling. Garrett CC is very rural in Maryland. It isn't close to any thing. Looks like a good hire. Here is what the school release said:

"On behalf of Alderson Broaddus University, I extend a warm welcome to Coach Roy "Bogie" Boggess," said Alderson Broaddus President Dr. James "Tim" Barry. "His strong background in coaching and mentorship makes him an ideal fit for our women's basketball program."

Boggess most recently served as the Owner/Director of Operations of Coach Bogie Skills Academy and was also the head coach at St. Francis Central Catholic in Morgantown, West Virginia. This past season, Boggess led the team to an 18-2 overall record as they were conference champions.

Prior to St. Francis, he was the head women's basketball coach as well as the Coordinator of Academic Service and Compliance at Garrett College in McHenry, Maryland. With the Lakers, Boggess finished with a 71-39 overall record including a 43-11 mark in home contests. The team was also two-time region champions.

At Garrett, Boggess also served as the Associate Head Coach for the men's basketball program beginning in 2010 before taking over the women's program in December of 2012. The men's team finished 45-20 during his stint and were back-to-back NJCAA Region X Champions.

Boggess graduated from West Virginia University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts. While there, he served as the team manager for the women's basketball program where he participated in team practices. He also organized team schedules, practice plans, and other material provided by the coaching staff among other duties.

Boggess went on to help start the Nate Smith Basketball School in Morgantown and served as the President of Operations/Head Coach/and Lead Skill Development Trainer. He coordinated year-round individual group and team training sessions as well as curricula for daily lessons, camps, and clinics.

In 2012, Boggess received a Master's in Sport Management from American University.

"He is respected by his peers and is committed to building strong relationships both with our campus community and the community-at-large," said Barry. "We look forward to working with Bogie to bring our women's team to the next level."
