  • Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

Local product Cole Whited of Philip Barbour will play for AB next season. He is 6'4" and 175 pounds.

He averaged 18.4 ppg this past season in helping PBHS to a 22-4 record and making it to the WV AA State Tournament semis. He had a huge game in the quarterfinals going 13 of 13 from the field against Bluefield. He was captain of the WV AA 3rd-team all state selection. I am hoping his teammate from PB signs on with AB. Shriver can flat play. Whited will likely be a JV guy his first year but there is some upside. Good athlete...playing on PB's state playoff football team and played soccer at the same time.

On a side note, Justin Caldwell got the Glenville men's basketball job. I know GSC listed Duncan Williams as a finalist for that job.

I also see that the MEC is adding Acro and Tumbling to its list of championship sports. I find that interesting considering only three schools have that sport and those 3 are the north central WV trio of Wesleyan, Glenville and Fairmont. They also sponsor women's lacrosse but only have six schools listed in the standings.

I am glad and thankful that Bob Huggins would bring us up there.

A few notes as I believe there is a good reason that Coach Huggins is bringing AB up there. One has to note that Bob's dad, Charlie Huggins, was a real standout basketball player for Alderson-Broaddus back in the mid to late 50s. He was an all-conference performer on some of those AB teams that made a nice run in the NAIA tournament. Charlie went on to have a great high school coaching career in Ohio. His overall record was 398-74. His winning percentage, as of a few years ago, was the best all-time in high school coaching in Ohio. I am sure it still stands.

After Charlie Huggins quit coaching, he became AD at Indian Valley HS. He mentored Greg Zimmerman over the years and the two are still close. Greg went on to become the head boys basketball coach at Indian Valley where he had some impressive teams. He was Ohio boys basketball coach of the year one season. I believe Bob's sister graduated from A-B.

I would say that Coach Huggins is planning something for his dad for this game. Charlie is in the Alderson Broaddus Hall of Fame. He was very close to Jack Funk who was a teammate of his at A-B. I have seen Charlie at some A-B games over the years. I am sure something will be planned pre-game between the two schools to honor Charlie.....just my guess.

Drew Rackley, from the Zanesville, OH area, has announced he is leaving UNC-Asheville after a head coaching change at the school. He knows Malik. I wonder if we have a chance. I would bet West Lib will be involved since they just lost Sincere Carry to Duquesne. Rackley was an awfully good player coming out of high school.

Dalen Solomon, a 6'5" combo forward out of John Hay HS in Cleveland, committed to Alderson Broaddus this evening.

Eddie Christian signed today. Good to see former A-B head men's basketball coach Dave Barksdale in the picture.

We signed a kid out of Leesburg, VA.....Henry Okoye.....6'6"/220 pounds. I don't know much on him other than he can jump and has size.

Right now if all sign, we have.....
                      Henry Okoye 6'6"
                      Dalen Solomon 6'5"
                      Eddie Christian 6'4"
                      Justin Curtis 6'4"
                      Cole Whited 6"4"

One or two will be JV players. We have some scholarship money left as Sam Sanders, Ohndo Smith, Mike Mitchell and Chavez Harper are seniors. We also have DeAundra Murphy's scholarship.

I haven't heard of any one leaving and by all accounts, all will be back. Of course, there is that GPA thingy that has bit us in the rear the last couple of seasons.

We have Mike Davis, Brandon Willis and Malik Bocook returning as a big 3. We return Parker Dortch who is promising. We need a size guy though. A real key is going to be if Anthony Carmon is eligible. He is up there in school. I don't know his status. He is UBER-talented but I don't know if school is his thing. You put him out there with those three and add Tyler Golphin who redshirted and we have quite a lineup. If all mentioned are good to go, this is probably our best team since Stan Hall and Sam Liggins were seniors and Terrell Eargle was a junior.

Just announced that 6'4" wing player David Shriver has signed with Alderson Broaddus. Big pickup for the Battlers as he is considered one of the best, if not the best, shooters in the state. He can help off the bench immediately and has a high basketball IQ.

Shriver averaged 21 ppg and 6 rpg this past year for Philip Barbour. He led PBHS to the WV AA state semi-finals this past season. He was a 1st-team All-State selection this year. He made 190 three-pointers the past two seasons while shooting 42% beyond the arc. Kid played very well in the Elite Camp that I was at last year. He can relieve Willis or Davis off the bench next year. His 6'4" frame can make it tough to defend beyond the arc.

His dad, sister and grandfather all played hoops at AB. His grandfather Jim Shriver is in the AB Hall of Fame and was on two AB teams that went to Kansas City in the NAIA national tournament. The student section bleachers are named after Jim Shriver. I don't think I have ever been to a game at Rex Pyles Arena that he wasn't at.

Just to add, David played in the WV vs. Pennsylvania All-Star game up at Chatham, PA. He was named the game MVP after scoring 25 points and winning the 3-point shooting contest.

Justin Curtis officially signed yesterday. He averaged 20.1 ppg as a junior out of Columbus East. He averaged 17.6 ppg this season. Good player that can hit the jumper but is excellent in transition at 6'4". Our best pickup to date. He has a high GPA so he should be good to go come November.
