  • Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

I am not interested in playing in the PAC. I do think I know someone who is employed at the school who is and who is grasping at straws. I can tell you that would not go over well with alumni.

Did I see this correctly? Our defensive coordinator is going to WV Wesleyan as a position coach? I also see that Craig Butler has been moved to the athletic department under the title of: Associate Athletic Director for Communications and Marketing. I hope he does a better job of communicating in this role than what he did communicating as SID. If fans and alumni followed his 'communication' back in those days, then you never knew we had teams playing. I hope that Jonathan Hooke is still our SID.

Jonathan Hooke left for another position.

I read above about JV. I didn't know schools had JV teams. Who do you play? All walk-ons on roster?

I got confirmation that we play defending D2 champ Ferris State at Rex Pyles Arena on November 10th. This is part of the G-MAC/GLIAC crossover event. We play Grand Valley the first night while Ferris is at D&E. It also looks like we play Michigan Tech the first night of the Gannon Tournament. WV Wesleyan on the road on Dec 31. My source is as good as it gets for this. Exhibitions are Fairmont State (which is legit this year), Wheeling Jesuit and of course at WVU.

I will try to have more on the recruits signed. I got confirmation from staff. We got a good one from Slippery Rock (high producer with one year left), some good freshman, a D-I transfer and a real good-looking JUCO. Of course, Willis informed the staff at the end of July that he was playing in Levar Ball's professional league with like 3 games remaining in league play. I do not understand that move in any way shape or form. I guess he wants to go overseas. But we signed some good ones and snagged one late. Bocook looks far better this year in both strength and conditioning. Davis is up there and good to go. Golphin is eligible now after redshirting.

If I don't have any thing tonight, then I will get something up on the class we signed. Our volleyball team lost to Glenville State the other night at home. GSC was 0-25 last season. I am anxious to see how we do in football this week. That is a tough a$$ football schedule we have.

I also want to congratulate our president for interacting as much as he does with the student body. No fluff here. I just think it is good that he gets out, eats with students, goes to games and sits with students, has listening sessions for students and just has a valid interest in the overall well-being of the student body. I thought when I was there that President Sizemore was a good president. But I don't ever remember him interacting with students in any way, shape or form. President Barry took over a tough situation and IMO has done a nice job under some tough circumstances.

JDon I take no joy in seeing players leaving early, fluking, etc. but I do smile thinking KWC will be over that issues for ,at least, awhile.

Here is a list of players signed and a little bio. I will try to have more later on site, but for now:

Brandon Simmons 6'9" transfer from Slippery Rock. He has one year left. He averaged 10.2 ppg, 8 rpg and had 84 shot blocks on the season. He is long and athletic. He can finish above the rim and hit the open jumper. He played two years for Marshalltown JC after originally committing to New Mexico State. SRU was 21-9 last year.

Bruce Spruell is a 6'4" guard transfer from Slippery Rock. He averaged 11.3 ppg. He had 128 assists to 67 turnovers. He avg over 4 assists per game.

Coye Campbell is a 6'0" combo guard out of Hesston JC in Kansas. He averaged 16.5 ppg last year and was an NJCCA Region 6 second team pick. Same JUCO that Malone's Ty Jordan went to. Coye shot 55% from the field.

Daveon 'Petey' Balls is 6'0" point guard that transfers to us from Northern Illinois. He averaged 4 ppg his last season at NIU.

Gavin Williams is coming to us after prepping last year in South Carolina. Big Shots had him rated in 2017 as the 54th best HS player in SC.

Justin Curtis is a 6'3" lefty out of Columbus East HS. He averaged 20 ppg as a junior. I can't find stats as a senior but production slipped off slightly. He had some high honors as a junior and senior on All-Ohio teams.

Dalen Solomon is a 6'5" / 225 pound freshman from John Hay HS in Cleveland. He had some great games for Hay this year: 28 pts & 9 boards vs University; 27 pts & 9 boards vs Max Hayes; 19 pts & 8 boards vs Rhodes; 16 pts & 10 boards vs John Adams, yada, yada, yada. Good production all season. Very consistent each night.

David Shriver is now around 6'4" and gained some strength-weight. He was a 1st-team WV AA all-state pick out of Philippi. He led PBHS to back-to-back state tournament appearances. This year was school's first victory in state tournament. Deadly shooter who has improved his overall game.

Cleveland Horton is a 6'2" guard out of Poly Tech HS in Baltimore, MD. They are a powerhouse in this area. Played with several D-I signees on a program that wins. Marcus Helton had this on him:

Aaron Loines is a 6'5" / 210 pound player out of Glenville HS in Cleveland. He is the last player to go thru Clearinghouse. He hasn't qualified yet, but he could still clear.

Bryan Polanco is a 6'4" transfer from Polk CC. I didn't get last year's stats. I linked his highlight tape below. Decent look. Would be a key reserve this year:
              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsipq0Liq4E

Ewan Pennie is a 6'6" / 230 forward that can shoot. He is out of Scotland. He needs to get in shape to play.

Eddie Christian played for Beckley Woodrow Wilson. Cole Whited played for PBHS.

Bocook came to school last year at 240 and got down to 220 by season's end. He came this year at 215. I think his production goes up. Losing Willis is a big blow. Best of luck....I don't wish ill-will for him. But he told staff late July of the move. Hopefully Golphin is ready.

I don't know how these guys will mesh with returners. I think the freshman are good if they adapt to Philippi and stay with us. Solomon, Curtis, Shriver and Horton have potential to be real good by senior year along with Loines. I am hoping with a new coach that the women's team is more competitive. I am glad the president took an initiative with that program. Football has away game vs Saginaw on Thursday and then turn around and play CIAA favorite Bowie State at home. Bowie has two pre-season all americans including their QB Amir Hall who is up for National Player of the Year. Then Tiffin. Men's soccer opens up at home against two Michigan GLIAC schools this year instead of traveling up there. We lost 2-1 to both of those schools last year including 2 OT game vs Saginaw Valley State.

Here is what I have for the OOC schedule:

                November 3: WVU (Exhibition)
November 10: Grand Valley State (H)
                November 11: Ferris State (H)
                November 17: Seton Hill (A)
November 23: Michigan Tech (@ Gannon Tournament)
November 24: either Fayetteville St or Gannon in the championship/consolation game
                December 31: WV Wesleyan (A)

That is six OOC games. Two more after that. G-MAC site has conference schedule up.

The new women's coach is opening up at IUP. That is tough. They were 30-4 last season and lost in the Final Four game to Ashland. The women are taking part in the G-MAC/PSAC crossover. That is new as far as those two conferences doing a crossover but smart with travel. They open November 10 at IUP and play Clarion the next night at IUP. That is all I have found on the women for OOC.

No. But my info is correct considering who told me.

Back to my post, Polanco is at 6'5" to 6'6". He adds length. Simmons is legit 6'9" with a long wing-span. I was told Campbell and Golphin could settle in nicely opposite Mike Davis. Both look good in off-season stuff. Let's not forget that Mike Davis averaged 22.1 ppg last season. Simmons gives us something this upcoming season that we haven't had in some time. That helps Malik, helps defense on teams that dribble-drive with penetration to have a shot-blocking threat and gives us a finisher around the rim. If depth develops over the course of the season with the younger players and the 1-position pans out, then we will be a tough out in Feb and March. Like I said, the freshman we brought in can be real good over the course of four years. We are basically bringing in 2 freshmen for every 1 transfer. That is a good mixture for recruits.

                    .

Other men's OOC is a much-improved Salem team at home. Women are playing a tough schedule for a 1st-year coach who is rebuilding the program.

One of our former players and alumni from the mid-80s stumbled across the article I wrote last summer about the 5 overtime game A-B had with WV State back in the mid-80s. He linked it to his facebook page and got four shares. This week alone, stats show we had 406 people in the USA read this small nugget that I reflected on during some idle time last summer. I cut-and-pasted the data below.

Playing at WVU will be good for the AB players, even though they're going to get blasted. It will be a great experience playing in a big arena like the Coliseum at WVU. Have fun guys!

The volleyball team beat ODU in a thriller this evening. They have won 4 of the last 5 games. Hats off for that victory tonight. It went 5 sets and down to the wire. Good student turnout tonight.

They host Trevecca tomorrow morning and Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday. I know the women needed those wins. We are now 5-4 on the year. Three weeks ago, I didn't think they would win 5 all year.

I can't make it in today. I was planning on coming in with my son for the football and volleyball game. We will try another weekend. This QB from Bowie is the real deal. He is 1st-team pre-season all-american. Hopefully, the rain slows him down. I have seen some cheap shots of my school on social media lately from other schools. I wouldn't trade the atmosphere in the vid below to be a part of some large uppity state school. You don't get this type of support and enthusiasm at those places. Being a Battler and supporting your fellow classmates....nothing wrong with that.

Here is the winning point in that 5-set thriller over ODU. I love the student support and energy:

We will play a likely pre-season All-American center when we play Ferris State in the opening weekend. The good thing about this exhibition is that we will see a pre-season All-American center and likely Top 10 lottery pick in Konate of WVU. It will be good that our post players have seen some upper level talent before playing that crossover event.
