I hope that there is locally- I have to go watch something!
I'd intended to go to the St. Johnnies vs. St. Tommies matchup at US Bank Stadium. I'd never gone, and it was my last chance. There was probably a solid chance that College Gameday would have been there too, assuming there was nothing else in FBS that needed attending too.
Are you guys interested in updates on the small offshoot conferences and associations that aren't NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA? I've been keeping an eye on them.
The NWAC is shifting their seasons around. As I understand it, Golf and Cross Country are to begin in the fall under a modified schedule. Volleyball and Soccer move to a February start date, and fall baseball/softball has been cancelled.
For those unaware, the NWAC is an independent JUCO conference (not affiliated with the NJCAA or CCCAA). It's located in Washington and Oregon, and one school in BC. Actually looks like a decent feeder system to DII and DIII. They do not sponsor football.
The tl;dr: Schools need approval from local authorities to play. Once 50% of the schools have been cleared to play in each given sport, the season can begin. It does not appear as if golf is affected by this.
I think college athletics departments will eventually agree to a tentative restart date of sometime early next year, and I have a bad feeling football will end up taking the year off. Having football in the Winter/early Spring and then back in the Fall could be a hard thing for students, particularly with the increased focus on head injuries. Basketball could see a lot of players who are on the fence about going pro making the decision to go pro instead of staying, even if staying would benefit them.
Also, I'm disappointed in the NCAA that they don't seem to be taking an active leadership role on this issue since (for the most part) there is some interplay between the many conferences and between the three divisions. They're letting the conferences decide, and right now it's all over the place. Not sure the pro sports leagues will all run their seasons, but at least they all have plans for what to do to complete uncompleted seasons and are discussing the next seasons this year. Well, baseball's commissioner forced a season on the players - not looking forward to what I think will be a players' strike or lockout in 2021.
