  • Are you in favor of the NCAA allowing DII athletes 5 years of eligibility?

The NCAA is actively reviewing a proposal to grant student-athletes a fifth year of eligibility, aiming to align with NCAA Division I, extend playing opportunities, and enhance Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. This potential rule change is part of broader discussions on eligibility and roster management within the NCAA.

Here's one take on the proposal...

No, it diminishes the ability for high school kids to get opportunities. The portal is already wiped out a lot of those opportunities. You need to move on after 4 years. I'm not against a redshirt year and four years of eligibility, but it's time to get on with your life after 4 years of playing. What's the purpose of 5 years?

I agree with TSULL. Red shirt year and 4 is plenty. This is D2 football. Help these young men launch their adult lives and let them get on with it.

My cynical side thinks it's a method for colleges and universities to suck an additional year of tuition from players who aren't full-ride, which is most D2 athletes.

I agree: a redshirt year and four years of eligibility is plenty.

This is going to sound harsh - but if one isn't good enough to play competitively beyond college, one needs to step aside and focus on a career at some point. Four years + redshirt + medical redshirt + grad transfer is plenty of time to figure that out. Anything more is just taking opportunity away from the next crew that earned their spots on a college roster.

One thing I don't understand about sports culture in the US is the contingent that's hellbent on prolonging adolescence as long as possible. We've got people that are 25 playing college football with two Master's Degrees. I get most of it has to do with getting more NIL, but at that point - step aside and let someone else have the spot that you were given. Sheesh.

So those against it, are you against it because of the clock or the years of eligibility?

What about a 5 year clock where no redshirt is required? 5 years, can play all 5?

I guess I’m against a rule that allows redshirt + 5. What I don’t want is a non- JUCO player getting more than 4 years plus a redshirt year and a JUCO player more than 6 total.

I can't remember where I read it, but I think the proposal is 5 years to play 5 seasons eliminating redshirts and waivers.

I think that's a good solution. Schools have used every dirty trick in the book to make it take most students 4.5 to 5 years instead of 4 to get a degree. There's no reason athletes shouldn't get to play the whole 5.

That said, in the context of the OPs link. It doesn't really address the juco thing at all.

What it would appear to do is give a player the possibility of 2 yrs at a juco, 3 at a D2, and 2 more in D1.

I’m fine with 5 at the D2 level if the redshirt provision is eliminated.
