There are disparities at all levels of college football, but most of the FBS schools do have the full allotment of 85 scholarship players or something pretty close to it. The differences at the lower levels of college football can be striking.

North Dakota State terrorized D2 in the eighties to the very early nineties...then they leveled off in D2...moved up to FCS in 2004 and took 7 years to start their current run.

They had two dominant runs 30 years apart. What say you IUP? You knew one of us would go here.

Interesting in that you seldom hear Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois mentioned in any discussion of good football states, but they certainly seem capable of providing talent at the FCS level, at least in the case of North Dakota State.

I agree.. it's interesting how the Dakota's and Montana's have multiple big time 1aa teams.....supplied mostly from states you don't hear about.

Also, the NDSU two deep has a FB, TE, and 2 Wr's. Bloom and Hurst could take some notes on how it can be done without running a spread O.

            DT 53 Cole Karcz 6-4 271 Sr.
            98 Matt Biegler 6-3 283 Jr..

            NG 92 Jack Darnell 6-2 288 Sr.
            94 Costner Ching 6-3 280 So.

Somebody should tell them you (cant) win with interior DL that small

Obviously the IUP crowd is hoping James Madison can break through...

Get way better players to run what they currently run. That's why it all the sudden stopped working.

You can win with smaller guys, but they'd better be quick.

Not much competition from big-time pro or college programs up there. What good players they have tend to stay at home, and good coaches can usually find enough big guys to build a decent line. Wisconsin has been doing that for years.

Yes but Minnesota and Wisconsin can dominate their own states and their only competition ends of being Iowa, Iowa State, and to a degree Nebraska. Similar to Kansas, Illinois is hard because there is a whole lotta nothing much outside of Chicago. A lot of rural high schools but that is also basketball country like rural Indiana. North Dakota State has the Fargodome and were able to recruit with a rabid fanbase and indoor facility. Fargo is a surprising city too.

Yep. I was just pointing out that it isn't bigger lineman the psac needs its just better lineman. SRU had a few that couldn't keep up last week. But they are more than big enough.

Better players...and maybe better coaching and play calling.

First time I had heard of North Dakota State, they were playing Ship in the 1981 D2 national semifinals at Seth Grove Stadium and gave everyone a primer on how to run the triple-option. Their QB was pitching to the trail back 8, 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. I actually covered that game for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Incidentally, the Raiders' victory over Virginia Union the week prior was the PSAC's first victory in an NCAA football postseason game.

Today, for pure intensity, I'd rather watch an FCS playoff game at the Fargodome than any FBS bowl game short of the final four.
